ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Abby Cole had 16 kills and a .433 hitting percentage, and senior Lexi Dannemiller added 40 assists as the University of Michigan volleyball team swept Minnesota to snap a five-match losing streak Saturday night (Nov. 8) inside Cliff Keen Arena. Set scores were 25-21, 25-18 and 25-19.
Cole had three blocks to go along with her 16 terminations, while freshman Caroline Knop added 11 kills. Knop made it a double-double and joined junior Lindsey Lerg with 11 digs. Lerg also had a pair of service aces. Dannemiller added five kills on seven attack attempts.
The Wolverines trailed for the first half of the first set before taking an 18-15 lead on a solo block from Cole. Minnesota tied the set at 20, but a kill from freshman Claire Kieffer-Wright and a pair of terminations from Knop gave U-M a three-point advantage. Michigan closed out the set on a Knop kill. She had eight kills in that set as Michigan hit .256 as a team.
Michigan took set two 25-18 as the Maize and Blue hit .300 while holding the Gophers to a .176 hitting percentage. Tied at 10, the Wolverines went on a 6-1 run, which included back-to-back kills from Cole. Kieffer-Wright's kill put Michigan up 20-15. It was 23-18 after another Cole kill and Dannemiller's setter dump gave the Maize and Blue the 2-0 lead. Cole led Michigan with seven kills in that set, while Dannemiller had 13 assists.
There were 10 ties and six lead changes in set three, before Michigan pulled away for the 25-19 win. Minnesota took a 14-13 lead on Hannah Tapp's termination. At 16-all, two Cole kills and two Gophers gave Michigan a four-point lead. It was 22-17 on a Lerg service ace. For the second straight set, a Dannemiller kill wrapped it up and gave the Maize and Blue the straight-set win. Michigan hit .303 in that set, and Cole again had seven kills.
U-M hit .284 for the match, compared to .200 for Minnesota. Michigan also had a 46-29 dig advantage and three service aces.
