ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team fell behind early and knotted the score in the 31st minute on Ben Manko's first career goal but surrendered a late score with a little more than five minutes left, falling to Ohio State, 2-1, Wednesday (Nov. 5) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
It took the Buckeyes just 26 seconds to find the opening tally of the night. Midfielder Yianni Sarris found Danny Jensen on the top right corner of the box and the forward drove a low, composed finish into the bottom left corner of the net.
After a shaky opening 10 minutes, the Wolverines began to wear down the Ohio State backline and find a rhythm in the midfield. In the 30th minute, Marcos Ugarte carried the ball into the Buckeye box and was sent sprawling to the turf by a stray challenge, drawing the Wolverines' first penalty kick of the year.
The ensuing penalty was saved by Alex Ivanov, but the ball trickled out the back for a Michigan corner. Urgate swung the corner into the box, and senior Ben Manko out-jumped his defender and slammed a header into the back of the net. The goal, Manko's first of his career, tied the score at 1-1, a score line that hdld through halftime.
The Wolverines went to the dressing room with an 8-5 shot advantage and a 3-0 advantage in corners.
The second half slowly began to swing in Ohio State's favor. The Buckeye's first major chance came in the 54th minute when forward Marcus McCray found Christian Soldat with a searching ball toward the Michigan penalty spot. Soldat flicked a sliding effort on goal, but keeper Adam Grinwiscame up with a massive, acrobatic effort to redirect the ball over the bar and out of danger.
Following a number of chances, Ohio State finally broke the deadlock in the 85th minute. Soldat floated a cross into the box and the ball dropped awkwardly and skipped its way untouched into the net, giving the Buckeyes a 2-1 lead.
The Wolverines picked up the intensity, as a last-ditch header by Rylee Woods with a little more than a minute remaining proved to be the final chance of the match as time ran out with U-M on the wrong end of the 2-1 outcome.
With the defeat, U-M will find itself on the road in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament, rematching the Buckeyes on Sunday (Nov. 9) at 1 p.m. in Columbus.
