ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team set a program record for goals in a Big Ten game, routing Penn State with an 8-1 win in front of 4,891 fans inside Yost Ice Arena. The Wolverines turned a close game into a decisive victory with five third-period goals, as JT Compher led the charge with his first two goals of the season.
Thirteen different Wolverines registered a point in the game, with Compher (2G, A) and Max Shuart (3A) leading the way. Andrew Copp, Zach Hyman and Alex Kile each had a goal and an assist, and Dylan Larkin, Travis Lynch and Zach Werenski added two assists each.
Sophomore goaltender Zach Nagelvoort had his strongest performance of the season, notching 41 saves to earn his third win of the season in net.
Holding a 3-1 lead early in the third period, U-M was called for a slashing penalty to put Penn State on its seventh power-play chance of the night. After the Wolverines cleared the defensive zone, Lynch found Copp streaking down the middle of the ice for a breakaway. Copp beat Eamon McAdam (37 saves) between the pads at 6:00 to put the Wolverines up 4-1.
Then the floodgates opened for Michigan. Compher scored his first goal of the season, as Shuart found him from below the goal line in the high slot. Compher fired a one timer through McAdam at 11:32.
Two minutes later, Kile continued the barrage, firing a quick shot over the shoulder of McAdam off a nice feed from Larkin at 13:37.
At 15:54, Compher recorded his third career two-goal game. Shuart's initial shot from the left circle hit the post, but Compher was there to clean up the rebound to make it 7-1 Wolverines. Michael Downing scored his third of the season and his second in as many nights with a shot that went off the glove of McAdam and in at 16:45 for Michigan fifth goal of the period and eighth of the night.
Though Michigan pulled away late, the game remained in doubt in the early stages, as the two teams played a scoreless third period.
Michigan had several great chances to take an early lead, starting with its first shift of the game as Compher and Cristoval 'Boo' Nieves both had backhanders stopped from in close.
Late in the third period with the game still scoreless, Penn State's Jonathan Milley hit the post on a 2-on-1.
Penn State appeared to take a 1-0 lead at 1:04 of the second period, as Scott Conway flipped a puck from the slot over the arm of Nagelvoort. However the puck stopped on the goal line, and Nagelvoort covered, which was confirmed on a video review.
One minute later, Nieves scored with a beautiful move through the middle of the ice. Nieves took a pass from Compher, cut around Penn State's Erik Autio and flipped a backhand shot into the top corner at 2:04 to put the Wolverines ahead 1-0.
Michigan took a 2-0 lead at 9:56, as Copp flipped a blind pass in front of the net to Tyler Motte, who beat McAdam between the pads.
The Wolverines took a three-goal lead at 16:45 as Larkin made a great play to get the puck to the net front. Larkin threaded a pass from behind the net to Kile, who had his initial shot stopped. Hyman was there to clean up the rebound to put Michigan up 3-0.
The Nittany Lions had two late power plays overlap in the second period and, after the Wolverines killed off the first penalty, scored on the 5-on-4. Tyler Holstrom beat Nagelvoort low from in front of the net at 19:27, making it a 3-1 game at the end of two periods, before the Wolverines blew the game open in the final frame.
Michigan will take on Rensselaer in the opening game of a weekend series on Friday night (Nov. 28) inside Yost Ice Arena. The puck is set to drop at 7:35 p.m. [ Tickets ]
