Today's game was part of the 2014 Progressive Legends Classic. Michigan defeated Bucknell, 77-53, in its first regional game on Monday (Nov. 17). The Wolverines will move on to Brooklyn, N.Y., Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 24-25, for the championship round at the Barclays Center. U-M will face Oregon on Monday and will play either VCU or Villanova on Tuesday.
As part of the 2014 Progressive Legends Classic, Michigan honored All-American Campy Russell during halftime.
Michigan last played in the Legends Classic during the 2010-11 season. The Wolverines opened by hosting a pair of regional games in Ann Arbor that season as well, both of which were also victories.
With tonight's victory, the Wolverines lead the all-time series with Detroit, 26-4. U-M has won 14 straight games against the Titans. The last time the two intrastate schools battled was during the 2009-10 season, with the Wolverines claiming a 75-64 win at Crisler Center.
The second half was marked by two runs that Michigan used to win the game. Trailing 34-30, Michigan outscored Detroit 18-5 to regain the lead. During that stretch, U-M held Detroit scoreless for 6:21, and Caris LeVert scored 10 straight points. With the game tied at 52 and 5:39 remaining, the Maize and Blue went on a 16-1 run over the next four minutes to put the game out of reach.
The Wolverines assisted on 14 of their 23 made baskets (60.9 percent), led by four helpers from Spike Albrecht. Albrecht recorded a team-best 4.6:1 assist-to-turnover ratio last season for the Wolverines (75:16) and has tallied 12 assists with only one turnover so far this season.
As a team, U-M pulled down 37 rebounds, compared to 25 by Detroit, including nine on the offensive end for Michigan, giving it 109 boards through three contests this season. The Wolverines have outrebounded opponents by an average of nine per game (109-82).
The Maize and Blue sank 16-of-20 free throws (80 percent), including 12-of-15 second-half attempts. Caris LeVert and Derrick Walton Jr. both went 6-of-7 from the charity stripe.
Caris LeVert had a season-high in both points and rebounds, finishing with 21 points, on 7-of-13 from the field, and nine rebounds.
Zak Irvin tallied 18 points and knocked down four shots from behind the arc.
Derrick Walton Jr. finished with 16 points, six rebounds and three assists.
The Wolverines' "Big 3" of LeVert, Irvin and Walton Jr. scored 55 of the Wolverines' 71 points tonight (77.5 percent).
Max Bielfeldt played a career-high 20 minutes, scoring four points and grabbing five rebounds. Bielfeldt also tied his career high with two assists.
Spike Albrecht knocked down two three-pointers in the second half, marking his first two triples of the season, and finished with six points, four rebounds and four assists.
U-M assistant coach Bacari Alexander played his final two years of collegiate basketball at Detroit. Alexander appeared in 62 games and, along with teammate Jermaine Jackson, helped lead the Titans to back-to-back NCAA Tournament berths in 1998 and 1999. He was known as "the enforcer" on the Titans' 1999 team.
Today's starting lineup consisted of Derrick Walton Jr., Caris LeVert, Zak Irvin, Kameron Chatman and Mark Donnal.
Attendance at tonight's Legends Classic game was 11,812.
