ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Abby Cole (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven), in her first home match in a Michigan uniform, had 16 kills and nine blocks to lead the No. 7-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team past Oregon State, 3-1, on Friday night (Sept. 6) in the first match of the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge inside Cliff Keen Arena. Set scores were 25-18, 25-14, 22-25 and 25-13.

Cole hit .682 (16-1-22) and had nine of Michigan's 11 blocks. She was joined in double figures in kills by seniors Lexi Erwin (Spring, Texas/Woodlands College Park) and Jennifer Cross (Scarborough, Ontario/Birchmount Park Collegiate), who had 13 and 11, respectively. Junior Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) had 46 assists in four sets to go along with six digs, while Erwin made it a double-double with 11 digs. Sophomore Tiffany Morales (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) had a team-high 17 digs, and classmate Krystalyn Goode (River Hills, Wis./Nicolet) added seven blocks, including one solo.
Michigan hit .500 (19-3-32), with Erwin putting down six kills as the Wolverines took set one 25-18. The set was back and forth in the beginning as a Cole kill tied it at eight. A mini three-point run put the Maize and Blue up 13-10, and Goode and senior Molly Toon (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) combined on a block to make it 15-11. Michigan extended its lead to 17-12 on an Erwin termination and went up 21-14 after a kill by Toon. Erwin's sixth kill of the set gave U-M a 23-16 lead, and the Wolverines closed it out after a Beaver error.
The Maize and Blue led for most of the second set, taking a 2-0 advantage into the locker room after a 25-14 victory. Cross served a 5-0 rally, which was capped by an OSU error. Goode's kill put Michigan up 12-6, and Cross made it 16-9 on a termination. With the Maize and Blue up 18-13, Toon served six straight points, including back-to-back blocks by Cole and Goode. An Oregon State service error ended the set, during which the Wolverines hit .409 (11-2-22) and Cole recorded four blocks.
There were 12 ties and seven lead changes in the third set, which the Beavers won, 25-22. Toon's kill tied the set at five, while a Cole kill knotted the score at 8-all. Cole put U-M up 12-9 on a termination, but Oregon State went on an 8-2 run, capped by a kill from Kelsey Zimmerman. Michigan came back to tie the set at 19 on blocks from Cole and fellow freshman Gabbie Bulic (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick). The Wolverines went up 20-19 on another Cole kill and 21-20 on an Erwin termination, but that was their last lead of the set. Oregon State had a 23-21 lead on a Michigan attack error and took the set on a Laura Schaudt kill.
Dannemiller had 13 assists and served out the last nine points of the match for the four-set victory. A Toon kill put U-M up 4-1, but Oregon State took a 7-6 lead after a Schaudt kill. Three straight points from the Wolverines were capped by a Cross kill, making it 12-9 and forcing OSU into a timeout. Cross put Michigan up 15-12 on a kill and started its nine-point run with blocks from Goode and Cole. Cole had two straight kills to make it 20-13, and two blocks, a solo from Goode and a block assist by Cole and Goode gave the Maize and Blue the win in the home opener.
Michigan hit .341 for the match and now has four straight matches of better than a .300 hitting percentage. The Wolverines had a 55-47 dig advantage and six service aces, three from Dannemiller.
U-M hosts No. 12 Oregon Saturday afternoon (Sept. 7) at 2 p.m. inside Cliff Keen Arena. The Wolverines will reveal their 2012 national semifinalist banner before the match.
NOTES
• Michigan won the first 11 sets of the season before falling in the third set to Oregon State tonight. The Wolverines had sweeps over Clemson, Xavier and Northern Kentucky last week.
• Michigan has had a .300 or better hitting percentage in all four matches this season. The Wolverines hit .341 in tonight's match, including hitting .500 in the first set.
• The 11 blocks by the Maize and Blue are a season high and the most since U-M had 12.5 blocks in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament vs. Tennessee (Nov. 29, 2012).
• Michigan improves its all-time series record against Oregon State to 3-1. The Wolverines have won two matches in a row against the Beavers.
• Freshman Abby Cole had a career-high 16 kills. It also matches a season high by a Wolverine. Lexi Erwin had 16 in a win over Northern Kentucky.
• Cole also set a career high in blocks and has the team high for the season. Krystalyn Goode had eight blocks in the season opener against Clemson.
• Senior Lexi Erwin recorded a double-double. She had 13 kills and 11 digs. Erwin picked up her 27th career double-double and the first by a Wolverine in 2013.
• Junior Lexi Dannemiller had a season-high three services aces to go along with her 46 assists.
• Sophomore Tiffany Morales led U-M with 17 digs. She had led the team in digs 34 times in her career and now had 13 consecutive double-digit dig performances dating back to last season.
