COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- In the Wolverines' second match of the Texas A&M Invitational, junior Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) contributed on U-M's final three points, including a pair of service aces, as the No. 7-ranked University of Michigan volleyball came back to win a 3-2 thriller over the Aggies on Friday night (Sept. 13) inside Reed Arena.

Dannemiller had a double-double with 49 assists and 17 digs. Senior Lexi Erwin (Spring, Texas/Woodlands College Park) recorded her second double-double of the season with 15 kills and 13 digs. Sophomore Tiffany Morales (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) had a match high 25 digs, while senior Ally Sabol (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) added 12 digs. Seniors Molly Toon (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) and Jennifer Cross (Scarborough, Ontario/BIrchmount Park Collegiate) had 12 kills apiece, while freshman Abby Cole (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) chipped in with 11. Sophomore Krystalyn Goode (River Hills, Wis./Nicolet) tallied eight kills and seven blocks, including three solos.
The two teams traded points in the deciding fifth set before a Michigan attack error put the Aggies up 4-2. Texas A&M went up 7-4 on an Allie Sawatzky kill, but the Wolverines battled back to tie the set at seven on blocks from Erwin and Goode. There were three more ties in the set but the Aggies broke through for a 12-10 lead on Sierra Patrick's kill. Shelby Sullivan's kill put Texas A&M up 13-11, but that was the final point of the match for the Aggies. Toon's kill gave U-M side out. Dannemiller's first service ace tied the set at 13. Another good serve and a great dig by Dannemiller was capped by Goode's kill, giving the Maize and Blue match point. Dannemiller answered with an ace as Michigan improved to 7-0 on the year.
Texas A&M had four blocks, and the Wolverines hit .077 as the Aggies took the first set 25-16. Michigan jumped out to a 5-1 lead on the serve of Sabol. The Wolverines made it 7-4 on Toon's termination and 9-6 on a Goode solo block. Michigan had its last lead at 13-12. The Aggies tallied a 6-0 run, then went up 19-14 on a Sawatzky kill as Michigan took a timeout. Blocks from Sawatzky and Jazzmin Babers made it 23-16, and Babers joined Kaysie Shebeneck on a block for set point.
Michigan held on late for a second-set victory, 26-24, over the Aggies. Texas A&M used a Shebeneck kill to go up 6-4, but a 4-0 mini run was capped by a Cross service ace. Michigan took a 12-8 lead on an A&M attack error and went up 15-10 on Erwin's termination. A Cross kill put U-M ahead 18-13 and the Maize and Blue went up 23-15 after a 4-0 run that included a Toon solo block. Michigan had set point at 24-18 after blocks from Goode and Toon, but the Aggies used a 6-0 run to tie the set at 24. Cole's kill and an Aggie attack error tied the match at a set apiece.
Dannemiller had 14 assists and Michigan hit .220 as the Wolverines took the third set 25-20. A Cross kill put U-M up 8-3. Goode's kill made it 10-4 Wolverines, and Erwin's termination gave the Maize and Blue a 12-7 advantage. Back-to-back Goode kills put U-M up 15-10 as the Aggies took time. Another Goode kill put Michigan up 18-12, and Dannemiler's termination made it 20-15. Toon's kill gave Michigan a 23-16 lead and her kill gave U-M the five-point win.
Texas A&M forced the fifth set with a 25-20 victory in set four. A&M hit .321 in that set and had a 10-6 lead on Angela Lowak's kill. Michigan made it 12-11 on an Aggie error but three straight points by Texas A&M was capped by a block. A Shebeneck kill put the Aggies up 19-14. Cross cut the advantage to 22-16 on a kill, but Texas A&M forced a set point on Sullivan's termination. Michigan staved off two set points, but Sawatzky's termination sent the match to a fifth set.
Michigan had 92 digs in the match while the Aggies had 96. Texas A&M also had 16 blocks, compared to nine for the Wolverines. Michigan held an 8-1 service-ace advantage, including three from Dannemiller.
U-M closes out play in the Texas A&M Invitational Saturday morning (Sept. 14) against No. 16 Florida State. That match starts at 11 a.m. CDT and is closed to the public.
NOTES
• Michigan recorded more than 90 digs (92) in a match for the first time since the Maize and Blue had 97 in a 3-2 loss at Toledo on Aug. 28, 2010.
• Michigan played its first five-set match of the season.
• The Wolverines had four players in double digits in both kills and digs for the first time in 2013.
• U-M had five solo blocks tonight and nine total. Krystalyn Goode had three of Michigan's five solo blocks.
• Senior Lexi Erwin led Michigan in kills for the fifth time this season and 64th in her career. She had 15 kills.
• Erwin is playing this weekend 90 minutes away from her hometown of Spring, Texas.
• Erwin recorded her second double-double of the year (15 kills, 13 digs). She now had 28 double-doubles in her U-M career.
• Sophomore Tiffany Morales recorded her eighth 20-plus dig match with 25 tonight. Morales now has 16 consecutive double-digit dig performances.
• Junior Lexi Dannemiller tallied her first double-double of the season with 49 assists and 17 digs. Both are season highs. Dannemiller now has 32 career double-doubles.
• Senior Jennifer Cross tied her career high with nine digs. Cross also had nine digs in the regional final match against Stanford on Dec. 8, 2012.
• Sophomore Krystalyn Goode had seven blocks. It is her third match of the season with at least seven blocks.
