MADISON, Wis. -- The 16th-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team picked up its first-ever road sweep of Wisconsin on Friday night (Oct. 18), defeating the 15th-ranked Badgers, 28-26, 25-20, 25-21, inside UW Field House.

Senior Jennifer Cross (Scarborough, Ontario/Birchmount Park Collegiate) was one of three Wolverines to record double digits in kills as she had 12 terminations on the night. Sophomore Ally Davis (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and senior Lexi Erwin (Spring, Texas/Woodlands College Park) added 11 kills apiece. Junior Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) had 35 assists and eight digs, while senior Ally Sabol (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) and sophomore Tiffany Morales (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) had 16 and 14 digs, respectively. Cross added five of Michigan's 11 blocks on the night.
The Wolverines took a back-and-forth first set with big blocks in the latter half. Wisconsin went up 5-3 after back-to-back aces, but the Maize and Blue answered, going ahead 10-9 after an Erwin termination. Michigan tied the set at 13 on a Badger error, but Wisconsin scored the next two points. A Dannemiller kill tied it at 15, and blocks from Goode and Dannemiller made it 17-all. The Badgers pushed ahead 20-18, but Goode's kill knotted it at 20. Back-to-back blocks by Erwin and Cole gave Michigan a 22-20 advantage, and the Wolverines had set point at 24-23 on Erwin's kill. Wisconsin battled to get set point, which Erwin staved off on a kill. A Cross kill gave Michigan its third set point, and she combined with Davis on a block to give U-M the early 1-0 advantage. There were 20 ties and 10 lead changes in the first set.
Michigan controlled the second set early then held on to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room. U-M went up 6-1 on back-to-back kills from Cross. Another Cross termination gave Michigan an 8-1 lead. Cross earned a kill of her dig to give the Maize and Blue a 10-3 lead. The Wolverines then went up 15-8 after a Goode kill and 19-11 on a Davis termination, before Wisconsin had a rotation error at 23-17 to give Michigan set point. The Badgers fought off three set points, but Cross' seventh kill of the set pushed it to 2-0.
Wisconsin jumped out to a 6-4 lead in the third set after a block, but Michigan came back to tie the match at seven on back-to-back blocks from Davis, who made it 9-7 Wolverines with a termination. Michigan moved ahead 14-12 on a Goode kill, and an Erwin termination off a Badger overpass gave U-M a 16-14 lead, forcing UW to call time. The set tightened up late as Davis' kill put the Maize and Blue up, 20-19. Michigan had two blocks in a row for a 23-20 advantage and ended the match on back-to-back terminations from Davis and Cole.
The Wolverines hit .223 on the night, compared to .119 for the Badgers. Wisconsin had a 66-62 dig advantage.
Michigan continues its three-match road trip this Saturday (Oct. 19) at No. 10 Minnesota. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. CDT at the Sports Pavilion in Minneapolis, Minn.
NOTES
• Michigan picks up its first road win in the Big Ten this season.
• The Wolverines move to 3-4 against ranked teams this season. The Maize and Blue also defeated No. 12 Oregon and No. 24 Ohio.
• Michigan wins in three sets for the first time since a 3-0 win over Maryland on Oct. 20.
• It is Michigan's first straight-set win at Wisconsin in school history. The last win for U-M at Wisconsin was on Oct. 30, 2010, in a four-set win, which marked the program's first victory on the road against the Badgers since 1992.
• Senior Jennifer Cross led Michigan in kills for the 16th time in her career and the fifth time this season. She had 12 terminations for the Maize and Blue.
• Cross had five block assists on the night and is just 10 away from breaking the U-M career block assist record.
• Senior Ally Sabol recorded a season-high 16 digs. Her previous season high was 15 on two occasions, most recently vs. Northwestern on Oct. 4.
