King Earns No. 6 Seed for NCAA Singles Championship

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- University of Michigan junior Evan King (Chicago, Ill./Kaplan Prep) received the No. 6 seed for the singles competition at the 2012 NCAA Men's Tennis Individual Championships, the NCAA announced Wednesday (May 2). The singles and doubles competition are scheduled for May 23-28 at Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., following the conclusion of the team championship May 17-22.
King, the 2012 Big Ten Athlete of the Year, earned the conference's automatic bid to the 64-player NCAA singles field. The Wolverine junior boasts a career-best 32-6 record, including a 20-2 dual mark from the No. 1 position, and carries a 15-match winning streak. It is King's second straight selection to the singles competition. Last year, he posted a 2-1 record, advancing to the Sweet 16 to garner ITA All-America honors. King is also a two-time participant in the doubles competition with former Wolverine Jason Jung (2008-11).
In addition, King and sophomore Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.Y./Old Bethpage JFK HS) were selected as an alternate team for the doubles tournament. The Wolverine duo is currently ranked No. 29 by the ITA with a 21-12 overall record and 13-9 dual record from the No. 1 position. They are listed as No. 5 on the alternate list.
The Wolverines earned their seventh consecutive berth to the NCAA Team Championship and will travel to Oxford, Miss., for NCAA Regional play Saturday-Sunday, May 12-13. U-M will square off against Middle Tennessee State in first-round action at 9 a.m. CDT on Saturday at Ole Miss' Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center. Should they win, the Wolverines will face the winner of No. 13 Mississippi/No. 46 Binghamton on Sunday at noon CDT.
