PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- The Big Ten Conference announced today (Tuesday, May 1) that University of Michigan sophomore women's golfer Yugene Lee (Athens, Ga./Oconee County HS) was named to the All-Big Ten second team.
Lee's first honor helps her become the 10th overall Wolverine and the fourth sophomore to earn the prestigious accolade. She joins U-M's all-time listing that includes: Shannon McDonald (1996, 1st); Sharon Park (1997, 1st); Wendy Westfall (1997, 1st); Kim Benedict (2002, 1st); Laura Olin (2004, 2nd & 2005, 1st); Brianna Broderick (2005, 1st & 2007, 2nd); Ali Stinson (2005, 2nd); Amy Schmucker (2006, 2nd); and Ashley Bauer (2009, 2nd & 2010, 1st).
Lee leads the team with a 75.85 per-round average -- nearly two-and-a-half strokes better than last season. She has started all 11 events this season, led U-M in three events and had two runner-up honors individually -- the Mary Fossum Invitational and the Big Ten Championships. She tied her career-best single-round tally with a two-under 70 in the final round of the Big Ten Tournament, helping her set a new personal 54-hole career best and U-M's 54-hole record at the conference tournament record at 217.
Senior Meagan Bauer (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) was named U-M's Big Ten Sportsmanship representative.
Lee and the rest of the Wolverines are off to their 10th NCAA Regional appearance in the last 12 years. The Maize and Blue head to Columbus, Ohio, for the NCAA Central Regional, which will be held May 10-12 at OSU's Scarlet Course. U-M is looking to finish among the top eight schools to advance to the NCAA Finals, to be held Wednesday through Saturday, May 22-25, at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.
