Michigan Head Coach Bruce Berque
On Michigan's doubles play ... "We won at No. 1 and No. 3 both days, and both times we had really good, competitive efforts. We were ahead at No. 1 throughout the day today and lost the break and the momentum. That long 6-6 game, where we ended up breaking, was a pivotal game in that No. 1 match. We were struggling to win the game points, and Shaun kept winning the deuce points until Evan came through. That was a good doubles team that they beat.
"It was the same kind of thing at No. 3. They were up and lost their momentum when that team started playing really well. At 6-6, we were down love-40 on Petrone's serve, but they battled back. Alex served great; he came up with some great first serves to win them that game before they broke them at 7-6. They are competing really well. They've figured out what they do well, what they're not as good at and adjusting their strategy according to their strengths. They competed really well under pressure in both matches this weekend."
On the Wolverines' weekend effort ... "It was great. To come away with two wins against two good, talented teams, we're very happy. We don't have a big squad, it's a young squad and Shaun is banged up right now, so we're very pleased to get two wins this weekend."
U-M Sophomore Alex Buzzi
On his win at No. 6 singles to clinch ... "I felt like I was in control throughout the match. I started out with an immediate break and stayed on top of him the whole. I just really didn't ever feel like I could possibly lose that first set. In the second set, he started serving better and was going for more shots and making them. I just stayed focused and got some good serves in to hold. I knew we needed the win. I saw that we were losing a couple matches, so my match was pretty vital."
On his recent singles win streak ... "I go out with the same mentality every match, but when you start racking up wins, subconsciously, you're inevitably going to gain confidence -- in your game, in your shots and just in everything."
U-M Freshman Alex Petrone
On clinching the doubles point ... "We just fought. We just came out, like every other match, and tried to give it our all. We did a good job doing that. If we're able to do that, whether we're up or down, I think we're likely to win the match if we come out firing. It's always easy to feed off of Evan and Shaun. They always bring a lot of energy to the table. The crowd was awesome. It was a great match and a lot of fun. There was so much energy, and I think we were able to bring that to singles."
On closing out with a dominant second set ... "I tried to learn from yesterday's match when I had some trouble closing out the match in the second. I couldn't get it done off my serve [in the first], because I felt like he was putting a lot of pressure off my serves and I wasn't making a lot of first serves. I learned in the second and kept doing what I had been doing well the entire match to get it done."
