ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Axelle Wouters (Antwerp, Belgium/Onze Lieve Vrouwe Antwerp) scored her first two career goals, as the No. 13 University of Michigan field hockey team defeated No. 14 Boston University, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 18) at Ocker Field. It was U-M's fourth straight win and keeps its best start going since the 2002 season.
In a battle of top-20 teams, it was Michigan that grabbed the lead early in the contest. In a scrum by the goal, Michigan had three shots, including a try by sophomore Rachael Mack (Bromsgrove, England/Bromsgrove School) that was saved by Terrier back Kiley Allosso. Sophomore Michelle Roberts (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke) collected the rebound and beat BU goalkeeper Valentina Cerda for her fourth goal of the campaign. However, Boston University tied the game at 1-1 in the 20th minute as Andrea Greene shot the ball from midair in the circle to the left side of the goal.
Wouters then scored the game-winner in the 25th minute as her strike from the right side of the circle went in the left corner of the goal. Michigan enjoyed an 11-4 shot advantage in the first 35 minutes, with Cerda making five saves.
The freshman from Antwerp, Belgium, did the exact same thing in the 39th minute, beating Cerda to the left side of the cage to make it 3-1 Michigan.
Fifth-year senior Christi Barwick (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) improved to 4-0 on the season, stopping one second-half Terrier shot. Cerda ended the game with eight saves. Michigan outshot BU, 15-7, and had a 6-4 penalty-corner advantage. Mack led the Maize and Blue with five shots (four on goal).
Michigan now opens Big Ten Conference play at Ohio State this Friday (Sept. 23) at 3 p.m. in Columbus. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network and shown on BTN Sunday, Sept. 25, at noon. Fans can watch the game live via the BTN2GO internet streaming service. For more information on BTN2GO, visit www.BTN.com.
