SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team took an early 1-0 lead at No. 22 Notre Dame but was unable to pull off the upset, falling, 2-1, in overtime on Friday night (Sept. 16) at Alumni Stadium. The Irish scored the game-winning goal on a header by Adam Mena in the first minute of the overtime.
Mena headed a crossing pass from Greg Klazura into the top left corner of the goal at 91:00. It was the second time the duo hooked up in the game on a scoring play for Notre Dame. The victory improved the Irish's mark against the Wolverines to 8-1-2 all-time.
Michigan grabbed the lead, scoring 39 seconds into the game on a goal by junior Latif Alashe (Northville, Mich./Northville HS), who took a centering pass from junior Etienne Lussiez (Livonia, Mich./Winston Churchill HS) in the middle of the box and buried it into the upper right side of the net. The goal was the first of the season for Alashe and gave U-M a 1-0 lead.
Notre Dame answered later in the first half on a goal by Mena. Klazura crossed the ball into the six and Mena touched it into the lower left for the tying goal at 32:57. The Wolverines outshot the Irish in the first half, 10-7, with both teams tallying three shots on goal. U-M had five corner kicks compared to four for Notre Dame. The Irish were called offside three times in the opening half.
Notre Dame outshot Michigan in the second half, 15-7, but both teams were unable to score the go-ahead or game-winning goal during regulation. Redshirt freshman Adam Grinwis (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills HS) made four saves in the second half to help send the game into overtime and finished regulation with a career-best six saves. Grinwis made two big saves in the final six minutes and Notre Dame's final attempt hit the crossbar with seven seconds left.
