WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- University of Michigan men's tennis player Evan King (Chicago, Ill./Kaplan) has been named to the 2011 USTA Collegiate Team for the second year in a row, the announcement coming on Monday (June 27) from the USTA and Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The USTA Summer Team is an elite training program for the top American collegiate tennis players. The program began in 1996 and is funded by the USTA. It is designed to provide college players with valuable exposure to the USTA Pro Circuit in a team-oriented environment during the year.
In addition to competing on the USTA Pro Circuit, USTA Player Development is hosting two Pro Tour Transition camps -- one for men, one for women -- for the selected players. The men's camp was held June 9-15 on clay courts in Boca Raton, Fla., while the women's camp will be conducted July 2-8 on hard courts in Boca Raton. Additional training opportunities for top American Collegiate players will also occur over the summer in Boca Raton and Carson, Calif.
Team members were selected based on their performance at the NCAA Championships, the ITA All-Americans and the National Indoor Championships. Players' results from the USTA Pro Circuit, ATP or WTA events were also considered. All 19 players selected received 2011 ITA All-America honors.
King ended his sophomore season ranked No. 17 in the ITA singles rankings, finishing with records of 30-9 (singles) and 20-14 (doubles). He reached the Round of 16 at the NCAA Individual Championships in May, becoming the first U-M men's tennis player to earn ITA All-America honors since Matko Maravic and Brian Hung in 2007. Additionally, King played the entire season at the top spot of the dual-match lineup in singles, amassing a 21-3 record (14-6 against ranked opponents), the best mark of any player in the program since U-M great Mike Leach in 1982.
King is entered in the Nielsen Pro Tennis Championships this week in Winnetka, Ill., squaring off against Vasek Pospisil (Canada) in the first round of the main draw. He then heads east next week, competing in the PNC Futures of Pittsburgh (Pa.).
