OXFORD, Ohio -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 4 USCHO/No. 5 USA Today) dropped a 2-1 decision on Friday night (Nov. 11) in the first game of a two-game series at Miami inside the Goggin Ice Center.
Miami jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the first period as Jeremy Mullin found the back of the net for the second time this season at the 1:41 mark. The score remained the same until mid-way through the second period when Tyler Biggs opened the lead to 2-0 for the RedHawks.
Forward Luke Glendening (Grand Rapids, Mich.) then put the Wolverines on the board and cut the Miami lead to 2-1 at the 7:39 mark of the third period. Defenseman Lee Moffie (Wallingford, Conn.) took a pass from his partner Mike Chiasson (Henderson, Nev.) before faking a shot from the point and finding Glendening wide open on the back door of the Miami net for the captain's fifth goal of the season.
Michigan put some late-game pressure on the RedHawks in search of the tying goal, but Miami's Cody Reichard shut the door on the Wolverines' hopes of a comeback.
Goaltender Shawn Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) made his 11th consecutive start for U-M, stopping 27 shots in his second defeat of the year. Reichard allowed one goal on 21 shots in the win for Miami.
Neither team was successful on the power play, with Michigan finishing the night 0-for-3 with the man-advantage and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
The Wolverines and RedHawks will close their two-game set tomorrow night (Saturday, Nov. 12) at 7:05 p.m.
