PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- After winning medalist for the first time in his career, senior Matt Thompson (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeshore HS) of the University of Michigan men's golf team was named Big Ten Golfer of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday (Oct. 19). This is the first time Thompson has received the award, and he is the first Wolverine to win the accolade since 2008 (Lion Kim).
Thompson birdied three of his final four holes to tie his career best with a five-under 65 to help him win the Windon Memorial Classic (Oct. 16-17), where he tied a career best with his five-under 205 (69-71-65). The medalist honor is the first in Thompson's career and the 39th individual title in U-M history.
In his four Windon Memorial Classics, Thompson has not finished outside the top 20 individually. He tied for 19th in 2010, tied 20th in 2009 and closed 18th as an individual in 2008. In fact, Thompson's medalist honor gives the Wolverines back-to-back individual winners at Northwestern's fall event. Last year, former Wolverine Lion Kim (2008-11) took medalist honors with a six-under 206 (69-71-67) at the North Shore Country Club.
Thompson and the rest of the Wolverines will close out their fall season with a trip to Greensboro, N.C., Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 29-30, for the 2011 Bridgestone Intercollegiate at the Forest Oaks Country Club.
