ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Despite holding a 26-12 shot advantage, the University of Michigan men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback at the hands of No. 14 Drake on Friday (Sept. 3) at U-M Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines were led by freshman forward Soony Saad (Dearborn, Mich./Dearborn), who tallied nine shots, with four hitting the target, while goalkeeper Chris Blais (Seattle, Wash./Kennedy Memorial) made three saves in the net.
The Bulldogs' Kenan Malicevic scored in the 65th minute off a deflection in the Michigan box, which was held up by Drake's goalkeeper Jordan Kadlec, who made nine saves in the win.
Senior forward Justin Meram (Shelby Township, Mich./Eisenhower) looked like he was going to get the first goal of the game just five minutes into the match, but his shot, which sailed into the lower left-hand corner, was ruled offside.
The Michigan offense kept it going as Soony Saad collected a thruball from sophomore midfielder Latif Alashe (Northville, Mich./Northville) out of the midfield, but the Drake defense pushed the ball just wide of the net. Saad's classmate, midfielder Fabio Pereira Villas Boas (Sao Paulo, Brazil/South Kent (Conn.), almost tallied his first collegiate goal with a shot from 30 yards out, but the attempt hit the crossbar and bounced over the net. Alashe also attempted to break the stalemate in the first half with two shots late in the half, including one that looked like it was on target but was blocked at the last second by a streaking Drake defender.
Michigan kept the ball in Drake's end of the field for the majority of the second half but still suffered its first loss of the season. For the second consecutive game, the Wolverines dominated the stat sheet on offense, combining for 53 shots in the first two games, with 14 on frame.
The Wolverines next head to the West Coast for the Seattle University Tournament next weekend. They open tournament action against Illinois-Chicago on Friday (Sept. 10, 2 p.m. PDT) and will take on host Seattle on Sunday (Sept. 12, 1:30 p.m. PDT). The tournament will serve as a homecoming for U-M goalkeeper Chris Blais, who hails from Seattle.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Steve Burns
On tonight's game ... "What's most important is when you suffer a setback in the game of soccer and the game of life is how you bounce back. This is a real character check and a real gut check because now we go out on the road 2,300 miles away and play in Seattle, and I'm expecting our guys to rebound. I believe that we have it as a team. I think everyone saw that we're a very capable potent team and, unfortunately, we didn't win a game that we dominated."
