GODFREY, Ill. -- Sophomore Evan King (Chicago, Ill./Kaplan) captured his first professional tennis title as an amateur on Saturday (July 31), teaming with Jordan Cox to win the doubles championship at the USTA Futures Tournament at Lewis & Clark Community College. King and Cox defeated Jean Anderson and Josh Zavala, 4-6, 6-3, (12-10) in the final.
King is spending the summer training as part of the USTA Summer Collegiate team, an elite training program designed for the nation's top collegiate players. As a freshman for the Wolverines last season, King was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and ITA/Midwest Region Rookie of the Year en route to a 21-13 record in singles play and an 18-11 mark in doubles play. He qualified for the NCAA Individual Championships in May, reaching the second round of the doubles draw with Jason Jung (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance).
To go along with his success in the doubles draw, King also reached the quarterfinals of the singles main draw after winning four straight qualifying matches as a wildcard. He was eventually ousted by Rhyne Williams, 6-3, 6-2.
King will return to the courts next weekend at the USTA Boys National Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich., along with U-M incoming freshmen Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) and Justin Rossi (Novi, Mich./Laurel Springs Prep).

On his first professional title ... "It feels great. I felt I was playing well all week in both singles and doubles. We knew were going to have a tough one to close it out, but it's extremely gratifying for me. I mean, that's my first professional doubles title. I'm excited about it and hopefully I can keep the momentum going at the next tournament."
