MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico -- University of Michigan sophomore rower Cristina Felix (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) teamed with her sister Rebecca to earn the bronze medal in the women's open double sculls at the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games being held July 17-Aug. 1. Felix, competing for Puerto Rico, also rowed in the quadruple sculls and placed fourth.
In the double, Felix and her sister Rebecca, who will be a freshman rower at Stanford in the fall, found themselves sitting in fourth place heading into the final 500 meters but with a terrific sprint were able to overcome the Nicaraguan team for a place on the medal stand with a time of 7:40.11, merely seven one-hundredths of a second ahead of the Nicaraguans.
The Felix sisters, rowing for Puerto Rico for the first time, were the youngest competitors in the regatta and had rowed together for only a month heading into the competition. They come from a rowing family; their father, Juan, rowed for four years at Columbia University and competed for Puerto Rico in the single in the 1984 and 1988 Olympics.
Felix, entering her junior year at Michigan, was a member of the Wolverines' second varsity eight that placed sixth at the NCAA Championships in May. Felix also earned Big Ten Boat of the Week honors twice during the 2010 season.
The Central American and Caribbean Games are a multisport regional championship held once every four years, typically in the even years between the Summer Olympics. The games are for countries in Central America, the Caribbean, Mexico, Bermuda and the South American countries of Surinam, Guyana, Colombia and Venezuela.
