SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's rowing team finished the 2010 NCAA Championships by posting an 11th place overall finish out of 16 teams on Sunday (May 30) at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif. U-M's second varsity eight finished sixth overall while the first varsity eight finished 12th overall and the first varsity four finished 11th overall. Michigan concluded the regatta with 43 overall points.
Virginia claimed its first national championship with 87 total points edging out second place California who finished with 82 points. Yale claimed the national championship in the first varsity eight helping the Bulldogs to a sixth place finish while Brown claimed the second varsity eight national championship en route to a fifth place overall finish and Virginia earned the first varsity four national championship.
U-M's first varsity eight was in a heat with several fast crews in the petite final and was in the race from the outset. Through the start all boats were even across the first 200 meters of the race. All the crews were aggressive at the start with stroke ratings from all crews in the 40s. Michigan State jumped out to an early lead which they never relinquished, crossing the finish line ahead of the rest of the field with a time of 6:28.53. U-M found itself in a battle with Wisconsin for fourth place as both crews were even across the 1500-meter mark. The Badgers took a move and were able to overtake U-M with 500 meters to go with Washington also taking a move with 350 meters left dropping the Wolverines to sixth place in the petite final with a time of 6:36.58.
The Wolverines second varsity eight completed a successful regatta with a sixth-place finish in the grand final. Marking the highest finish for the Wolverines second varsity eight since the 2005 season where they also finished sixth. U-M opened the race sitting in fourth place through the first 500 meters. Brown and Stanford were aggressive right out of the gates with stroke rates in the high 30s and low 40s from the starts. The Wolverines, rowing a clean race from the outset, battled throughout, but just didn't have enough speed to overtake Brown, Stanford and California who were off to the races as the Wolverines dropped behind to sixth place through 1500 meters. U-M closed in on Princeton who was sitting in fifth-place late in the race but couldn't catch the Tigers crossing the finish line with a time of 6:40.34. U-M, who entered the regatta as the 10th seeded boat, exceeded expectations by finishing as one of the top crews in the country.
The first varsity four opened the race in fifth place after the first 250 meters. Clemson and Yale opened up as leaders pulling away from the pack early, but with moves from the Stanford and Princeton crews after the 500 meter mark, the leaders changed with Stanford, Clemson and Yale sitting in the top three spots. The Wolverines were in striking distance and were battling with Yale and Clemson for the third place spot as the teams crossed the 1000 meter mark. It remained a tight race for third place with 350 meters remaining, but Yale managed to pull ahead with 300 meters remaining in the race and held on to take third place with a time of 7:24.25. The Wolverines went back and forth with Clemson for fourth place but the Tigers pulled away with 100 meters remaining in the race to take fourth place with a time of 7:25.67. U-M took fifth place, crossing the finish line with a time of 7:27.23 to give the Wolverines five points towards the team scoring.
The 2010 NCAA Championships concludes the 14th varsity season of Michigan rowing, with head coach Mark Rothstein leading the program since its inception.
