ATHENS, Ga. -- Junior Jason Jung (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team was eliminated in the first round of the singles draw at the 2010 NCAA Individual Championships on Wednesday (May 26), falling to No. 11 Michael Shabaz (Virginia), 6-3, 6-2, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. With the loss, Jung ends 2009-10 singles play with a 21-16 record.
The first set was close at the start, until Shabaz broke a serve to take command, eventually winning the first set 6-3. Shabaz, who spent the majority of the season playing at No. 1 singles for the nation's top-ranked team heading into the NCAA Championships (Virginia), closed the match out with a second set win, winning by the final score of 6-3, 6-2.
Jung was aiming to become just the second U-M player since David Kass (1988-92) to win a match in the singles draw at the NCAA Individual Championships. Former Wolverine Matko Maravic (2005-08) remains the last victor at the event, as he defeated Matic Omerzel (Georgia) in the first round of singles at the 2007 NCAA Individual Championships before losing in the second round.
Jung looks to avenge his singles loss as he returns to the court in the first round of doubles action tomorrow (Thursday, May 27), teaming with freshman Evan King (Chicago, Ill./Kaplan). The Wolverines' No. 31-ranked duo will take on Raony Carvalho/Rafael Garcia (Texas Tech), who ranks No. 17 in the country. The match time will be announced Wednesday.
