
Wolverines Take Third Place at 2010 Big Ten Championships

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's rowing team collected a third-place team finish at the 2010 Big Ten Conference Championships on Saturday (May 1) at Lake Ovid. U-M put three crews on the medal stand led by second-place finishes from the second varsity eight and the novice eight. The varsity four earned a bronze medal.
Wisconsin earned its first team title in dominating fashion, posting four first-place finishes, including wins in the second varsity eight and the varsity four, and won the title with 148 points. Michigan State (132 points) earned runner-up honors and the Wolverines took third place (111 points) for its third top-three finish in the last four years.
In the varsity eight grand final, Ohio State and Wisconsin were neck and neck heading into the final 250 meters and the Wolverines managed to cut into Ohio State's lead but could not pull it out late, finishing in fourth place, just three seconds behind Wisconsin and Ohio State. The Spartans took first.
In the second varsity eight, the Wolverines got a great start out of the gate and held an early lead through the first 500 meters. Wisconsin made a move and took a seat lead on the Wolverines, who battled back in the middle half of the race. The battle between Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio State for first place was very tight heading into the final 250, but the Badgers pulled it out, crossing the line with a time of 6:22.09, just two seconds ahead of the second-place Wolverines, who finished with at time of 6:24.99.
Michigan's first varsity four reached the medal stand by taking third place with a time of 7:24.99. The Wolverines looked good out of the gate, but top-seeded Wisconsin against showed its speed, taking a commanding lead at the 1,000-meter mark and maintained it throughout for first with a time of 7:15.13. U-M stayed even with Michigan State and Ohio State, but Michigan State started to pull away with about 500 meters remaining and crossed the line in second place with a time of 7:17.02, while Ohio State took fourth with at time of 7:30.83.
The Wolverine novice eight earned U-M's first medal of the afternoon with a second-place showing. The Wolverines started even with top-seeded Wisconsin through the first 500 meters, but the Badgers slowly pulled away late in the race to take the title with a time of 6:42.70. U-M kept it close and crossed the finish line in 6:45.12 to earn its second consecutive second-place finish. Michigan State placed third (6:53.37) and Indiana took fourth (7:04.92).
The second varsity four, competing in its second race this season, took fourth place with a time of 7:42.55. Top-seeded Minnesota took the boat title (7:25.65).
In the second novice eight, U-M started well, but Wisconsin's novices jumped out to an early lead at around the 1,000-meter mark and did not look back, winning in 6:53.10. U-M fell into a race for third with Michigan State, but the Wolverines crossed the line with a time of 7:12.26, just .13 behind the Spartans (7:12.13).
The Wolverine novices had a good start to the championships and advanced to the grand finals in both the first novice eight and second novice eight. In all, the Wolverines advanced each of their six boats to the grand finals in the morning session and won their heat in the varsity four. It is the second consecutive season U-M has advanced each boat to the grand finals. Michigan State and Wisconsin also advanced all its boats to the grand final.
The Big Ten Network will air the rowing championships live on May 16 at noon. Michigan will take next weekend off before heading to Oak Ridge, Tenn., for the Central/South Region Sprints, held May 15-16.
