BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team (RV USA Today/No. 20 USCHO) scored two first-period power-play goals and held on for a 2-1 win at Bowling Green on Thursday (Feb. 4) at the BGSU Ice Arena.
Michigan converted twice during a five-minute major power play with goals at 12:05 and 13:16 of the first period. Junior center Matt Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) opened the scoring and freshman right wing Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas) scored the eventual game-winner -- his second in as many games.
Junior goalie Bryan Hogan (Highland, Mich.) allowed one goal, which came late in the first period, on 13 shots.
Rust buried a rebound from the right side of the net to open the scoring at 12:05 in the first period. Senior defenseman Steve Kampfer (Jackson, Mich.) drew the primary assist with a hard slap shot from the left point.
A minute and 11 seconds later, Brown wristed a shot between the left post and the goalie's right shoulder. Junior center Louie Caporusso (Woodbridge, Ontario) created the chance with a cross-ice pass from the right point to the lower left circle.
BGSU cut its deficit in half on a Tomas Petruska goal at 15:50. Petruska was allowed to circle out from behind the net and lift a shot into the U-M goal.
In the second period, Michigan killed off a pair of Falcon power plays while going scoreless on its one power-play opportunity. U-M outshot BGSU, 11-4, in the frame for a 21-10 advantage on the shot chart through 40 minutes.
Bowling Green's David Solway had the best chance to tie the game in the third period on a rebound in the right circle, but he rang his shot off the right post near the 12-minute mark.
The Wolverines made things difficult for themselves with three minutes remaining when they were whistled for boarding. A strange carom off the end boards nearly cost U-M with 1:29 to play; a dump in hit a break in the boards and shot out into the crease while Hogan was behind the net anticipating it to wrap cleanly. Fortunately, Hogan scrambled back and the defense slapped the puck out of danger to preserve the win.
Up next for the Wolverines is the Camp Randall Hockey Classic on Saturday (Feb. 6) inside Camp Randall Stadium. U-M takes on the No. 3-ranked Wisconsin Badgers at 5:10 p.m. CST. The outdoor game will be televised by the Big Ten Network.
