ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Despite outshooting Northern Michigan, 39-21, and getting eight power-play opportunities, the University of Michigan ice hockey team saw its eight-game home unbeaten streak (7-0-1) end in a 3-1 loss to Northern Michigan on Friday (Feb. 19) at Yost Ice Arena.
The Wildcats' first goal at the 11:46 mark of the first period stopped Michigan's home shutout streak at 172:05, which dated back to Jan. 16 against Alaska. Northern Michigan scored 1:32 later to take a 2-0 lead. The Wolverines responded with a goal of their own with 3:06 remaining in the opening frame when junior left wing Carl Hagelin (Sodertalje, Sweden) banked his shot off an NMU defender. Neither team scored again until Northern Michigan recorded an empty-netter with 45.4 seconds left in the game.
Despite spending six of the first 10 minutes of the game on the power play, Michigan was unable to use the man-advantage to its benefit. The Maize and Blue's best scoring opportunity during that stretch came on a shot from junior center Louie Caporusso (Woodbridge, Ontario) from his position in the right faceoff circle during U-M's first power play of the night.
Midway through the first period, senior captain Chris Summers (Milan, Mich.) kept it a scoreless game when he batted a puck out of mid-air with his glove, preventing what surely would have been a goal as the disc had already made it past junior netminder Bryan Hogan (Highland, Mich.).
The Wildcats scored seven seconds into their first power play of the game at the 11:46 mark in the initial stanza. Left wing Greger Hanson shoveled the puck backhanded toward the net from the bottom of the right faceoff circle. His shot somehow managed to squirt through Hogan's five-hole and into the lower left portion of the cage.
A minute and 32 seconds later, Northern Michigan netted another goal to take a 2-0 lead over the Wolverines. Left wing Jared Brown, who had assisted on NMU's first goal, quickly turned to face the net and flung the puck at the cage from the high slot and right wing Phil Fox redirected the puck into the net from his post just outside the crease.
Hagelin recorded his team-best 14th tally of the season with 3:06 remaining in the first period to bring the Wolverines within one goal. Junior center Matt Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) slid the puck forward to Hagelin, who rushed up the right wing carrying the puck before he quickly spun around in the right faceoff circle and banked his shot off of NMU defender TJ Miller to put it past Northern goaltender Brian Stewart.
With 7:06 remaining in the second period and U-M on the power play, sophomore left wing David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.) backhanded a shot toward the cage from the goal line to the right of the net, but the NMU goaltender stretched out to block the shot from crossing the goal line.
NMU right wing Tyler Gron broke away and raced up the center of the ice and tried to sneak the puck through Hogan's five-hole, but the Michigan goalkeeper got low and blocked the shot with about a minute and a half left in the middle frame to keep it a 2-1 game.
Michigan went on its seventh power play of the contest with 5:14 left to play in regulation. U-M eventually earned a five-on-three opportunity when another Wildcat was sent to the box with 33 seconds remaining on the first NMU penalty. However, U-M could not capitalize with the two-man advantage and the remaining 1:01 of the second power play was canceled out when the officials called a penalty on a U-M forward for boarding.
Just after the Northern Michigan power play expired, NMU's Jared Brown scored an empty-net insurance goal for the Wildcats with 45.4 seconds remaining.
The Wolverines conclude their weekend series against Northern Michigan on Saturday (Feb. 20) at Yost Ice Arena. The game is slated to start at 7:35 p.m. and will be televised by Comcast (Channel 900 in Michigan).
