ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 9 USA Today/No. 8 USCHO) scored four of the game's final five goals to defeat Notre Dame (No. 11 USA Today/No. 11 USCHO), 5-3, on Saturday (Nov. 13) at Yost Ice Arena.
Trailing 2-1 after 20 minutes, the Maize and Blue rallied with three in the second period and one in the third frame to earn the series split against the Fighting Irish. Thanks to a lucky bounce off his leg, senior co-captain Carl Hagelin (Sodertalje, Sweden) notched his third game-winning goal of the season.
Michigan's third line of freshman left wing Luke Moffatt (Paradise Valley, Ariz.), sophomore center A.J. Treais (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and sophomore right wing Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas) accounted for six points. Treais had a goal and an assist, while Moffatt had three assists and Brown had a single helper. Senior goalie Bryan Hogan (Highland, Mich.) made 34 saves, including eight in the final six minutes when Notre Dame had three consecutive power plays.
Notre Dame proceeded to take the first lead of the game at 5:15. Anders Lee won a battle for the puck in the right corner and drove to the net. A centering pass found T.J. Tynan staring at a half-empty net for the 1-0 lead.
However, Michigan responded at 9:42 with a goal from Treais after Brown fired a shot into the zone from the blue line. A Notre Dame defender muffed the puck behind the net, and Moffatt took advantage by scooping it up and attempting a wraparound. The puck missed the target but slid to the left post, where Treais hammered it home for the 1-1 equalizer.
The Fighting Irish regained the lead 2-1 at 13:22 when Anders Lee took a bouncing puck into the Michigan zone and whacked a chip-shot over the defender's stick and Hogan's left shoulder.
Midway through the second stanza, the Wolverines scored back-to-back goals separated by just 28 seconds. Hagelin fought for the puck behind the Notre Dame goal and backhanded a pass to senior center Matt Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), who crashed the net and slipped one to the right of the goalie at 10:28 to tie the game at 2-2.
Moments later, freshman defenseman Jon Merrill (Brighton, Mich.) rifled a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle that deflected off Moffatt's shoulder and high into the air. The puck seemed to be lost as players were searching all over the ice, but senior rearguard Chad Langlais (Spokane, Wash.) spotted it along the far right boards, picked it up and walked into the net as Irish goalie Mike Johnson's back was turned, looking the other way for the elusive puck.
At 13:58 of the second period, Joe Lavin entered the U-M zone and loaded up a shot that beat Hogan between the legs to tie the game once again, 3-3.
Michigan refused to let that tie stand as senior defenseman Tristin Llewellyn (Ann Arbor, Mich.) kept the puck in the zone after a failed attempt to clear by Notre Dame and backhanded it toward the net. With his back to the net, Hagelin deflected it by Johnson to push U-M back on top by a 4-3 tally.
Junior defenseman Greg Pateryn (Sterling Heights, Mich.) bolstered the lead at 12:20 of the final frame and put the Maize and Blue up, 5-3. With traffic in front of the net, Pateryn took a slap shot from the right point that ricocheted off two defenders and flew up and over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
Michigan had to kill off three penalties in the latter half of the final frame at 13:51, 16:13 and 18:34, marking the first three penalty kills of the series against Notre Dame. In the final 1:26 seconds of the game, the Wolverines successfully warded off a six-on-four after Notre Dame pulled its goalie to secure the 5-3 victory.
Michigan's four-game home stand continues next weekend (Fri-Sat., Nov. 19-20), when it hosts the Lake Superior State Lakers. Both games are slated for a 7:35 p.m. start.
