DETROIT, Mich. - The University of Michigan ice hockey team (RV USA Today/No. 20 USCHO) edged out rival Michigan State (#13 USA Today/No. 12 USCHO) in a 5-4 thriller on a late goal from freshman right wing Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas) at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit on Saturday evening (Jan. 30). Five Wolverines scored and six players recorded multi-point games to extend Michigan's winning streak over MSU at the Joe to five games.
Michigan converted on three of its 10 scoring chances with tallies in the first period from freshman center A.J. Treais (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), senior captain and defenseman Chris Summers (Milan, Mich.) and senior left wing Brian Lebler (Penticton, B.C.) to hold a 3-0 advantage entering the middle frame. Michigan State rallied with four unanswered goals, including two second-period goals in a span of 4:54, to grab a 4-3 lead heading into the final stanza. The Wolverines responded with two third-period markers 2:41 apart to regain the lead for good late in the game.
The Wolverines scored first when Treais pushed in a loose puck at the 13:07 mark in the opening period during four-on-four play. Summers rushed up the middle of the ice as he entered the Spartan zone, powering his way to the net and getting off a backhanded shot. The puck went off MSU netminder Drew Palmisano to a crashing Treais, who backhanded the rebound into the open net to put the Wolverines up 1-0.
Summers and Lebler scored 1:43 apart in the closing minutes of the first period to give the Wolverines a three-goal lead heading into the first intermission. Summers beat the MSU goalkeeper on a blast from the right point to give the U-M captain his second point of the evening and 13th overall (4-9-13) in 15 career games at Joe Louis Arena. Lebler scored with 25.6 seconds left in the opening stanza on a one-timer from the low slot, marking the 10th time this season that the Wolverines have scored three markers in a single period.
Michigan State made it onto the scoreboard 3:42 into the second period with a shorthanded tally. As right wing Dustin Gazley fell to the ice, he managed to relay the puck to left wing Andrew Rowe stationed alone outside the crease for the easy goal.
The Spartans inched within one 4:53 after their first goal on a shot from MSU center Brett Perlini. The sophomore scored from his position at the left faceoff dot off a big rebound from Jeff Petry's shot on goal, firing the puck into the upper right corner of the cage.
With five seconds left on a Michigan penalty kill, Petry netted the game-tying goal 50 seconds into the third period. He made a cross-ice feed to Torey Krug, who took a shot from the left point. Petry was able to put the rebound into the back of the cage from his spot just outside the U-M crease to even the game up at 3-3.
Michigan State completed its comeback bid to take a 4-3 lead when Dean Chelios scored a wraparound goal with 6:51 remaining after he stole the puck from a Michigan forward behind the U-M net.
Rust registered his third career shorthanded tally at the 15:12 mark of the third period to pull the Wolverines even with Michigan State at four goals each. Junior left wing Carl Hagelin (Sodertalje, Sweden) stole the puck in the MSU zone before taking a shot, which was blocked by a Spartan. When the puck fell to the ice, Hagelin pushed it over to the left side of the crease for Rust to jam into the net.
The Maize and Blue took a 5-4 lead 2:41 later when Brown stuffed the puck between the left goal post and the netminder's right skate. Michigan State pulled its goalkeeper with 1:39 remaining, but pressure from the Wolverines limited the number of shots from the Spartans and created a few empty-net scoring chances for Michigan in the waning seconds of the contest.
Junior goaltender Bryan Hogan (Highland, Mich.) made 24 saves in the game to earn the win between the pipes.
Michigan is back in action on Thursday, Feb. 4, at Bowling Green. Faceoff is set for 7:05 p.m.
