Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On tonight's game..."I like the way we came to play. We were a different team than last night. They were short in the first period, they got back in the second period, and then it was anyone's game in the third period. Disappointingly, we gave up the shorthanded goal, but it's exhilarating when you score one: and they were big goals in the game. Then we had to battle back in the third period. We had the lead going into the third period. We shouldn't be battling back, but that's the way the game turned, and we did. We were lucky but we won."
On the penalty kill..."Having to kill that penalty was tough, when you're down and now you're killing a penalty. I think the one shorthanded goal really helped us. But at the end, tying it up was big. [Freshman center] A.J. Treais' line doesn't normally kill penalties, and they get some power play time, but they were one of our best lines all night. They generated chances and goals, so it was fitting that [freshman right wing Chris Brown] put that last goal in."
On the changing momentum..."We came to the rink ready to play. We had a big edge in the game on the scoreboard and then we lost it, so there was no use crying about it. We just had to move on and start again, and win the rest of the game, and that's what it came down to."
On freshman right wing Chris Brown..."We had a lot of good individual efforts. [Junior left wing Carl] Hagelin made a great individual effort on the shorthanded goal that [junior center Matt] Rust tapped in. And then Brown and [junior center Ben] Winnett and Treais had a good shift for us. They got the puck down low. Those are ugly goals, but they count at both ends of the ice. We saw one at our end too."
Freshman Forward Chris Brown
On tonight's win... "It's huge. We're not doing so well in the CCHA right now, and we need all the points we can get. To beat a top-ranked team like that is really going to boost our confidence going into this next week."
On coming back to win the game... "We knew that we had to come back. We stayed positive on the bench and everyone remained positive. We bought into the system and worked hard. When we scored our fourth goal, we had some momentum and we knew we were going to go down and win the game."
On the significance of beating rival Michigan State... "Any time you play a rival like Michigan State it's going to come down to the last few seconds of the game. Like Coach said, we have to play 60 minutes and that's what we did."
Senior Defenseman Chris Summers
On the start of the game... "[It was about] just jumping them off the start. The only thing that we are disappointed in is the let up in the second period. We were playing on our heels. You have to maintain that momentum throughout the entire game even though it's hard to do that. You have to at least give it a shot."
On how Michigan was able to come back... "The mind set. We knew from last night that we are a team that has to go full 60 [minutes] so we did. We had relentless pressure and it paid off tonight."
On the importance of winning... "It's a good win in the CCHA standings - especially against Michigan State. They are a top-two team right now. Any win against a ranked opponent or a good team like Michigan State is a good win for us."
