ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team potted six goals for the second straight game in 6-0 triumph over Alaska on Friday (Jan. 15) at Yost Ice Arena. Fourteen Wolverines registered a point and four players recorded multi-point games in the 6-0 win, while junior netminder Bryan Hogan (Highland, Mich.) stopped 17 shots for his fifth career shutout and second of the season.
The Wolverines surged to a 3-0 lead over Alaska with a trio of goals in a span of 1:23 late in the first period with markers from freshman defenseman Lee Moffie (Wallingford, Conn), rookie right wing Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas) and senior left wing Brian Lebler (Penticton, B.C.). Three more Wolverines -- freshman center A.J. Treais (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), Lebler and rookie left wing Lindsay Sparks (Oakville, Ontario) -- scored to extend their lead over the Nanooks to six.
Freshman right wing Kevin Lynch (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) was brought down on the penalty kill with less than four minutes remaining in the first period when he tried to deke a UAF defender in a one-on-one situation, sending a Nanook to the penalty box. During the subsequent four-on-four play, Moffie put Michigan on the board with three minutes remaining in the first stanza when he beat UAF netminder Scott Greenham glove side. Junior center Matt Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) fought for the puck and fell to the ice along the left back boards where junior left wing Carl Hagelin (Sodertalje, Sweden) scooped up the loose puck, turned around, and slid a well-placed pass to Moffie stationed on the other side of the crease for the easy goal.
Brown scored 27 seconds later to mark Michigan's ninth power-play goal in the past four games. Sophomore center David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.) relayed the puck to senior defenseman Steve Kampfer (Jackson, Mich.), who sent a shot flying from the high slot. The disc found its way through traffic before getting tipped into the net by Brown for a 2-0 Michigan advantage.
Just 56 seconds after Brown's tally, Lebler netted his 25th career goal to improve Michigan's lead to three goals. Upon receiving a drop pass in the high slot from junior right wing Ben Winnett (New Westminster, B.C.), Lebler rocketed a shot into the upper left corner of the net, cementing Michigan's lead entering the first intermission.
UAF netminder Steve Thompson entered the game to start the second period, relieving Greenham, who had allowed three goals on 11 shots through the first 20 minutes of play. The goalie change did not make a difference as Michigan still found a way past Thompson when junior right wing Winnett, who finished the game with two assists, sent a centering pass from along the right half boards to Treais crashing the net for the score 3:27 into the second period.
Lebler potted his second goal of the night at the 1:30 mark in the third period. Wohlberg relayed the puck to Brown, who was behind the goal line near the left corner. Brown then brought the puck toward the net, trying to stuff the disc past Thompson. Lebler capitalized on the rebound from his position in the low slot to make it a 5-0 game.
While on the power play, Sparks earned his fourth tally in as many games after a slick deke created some room in front of the crease for the freshman to backhand the puck into the net with 7:49 left in the contest.
Michigan wraps up its weekend series against Alaska on Saturday (Jan. 16) at Yost Ice Arena. The game will be broadcast by Comcast (channel 900 in Ann Arbor) with the puck dropping at 7:35 p.m.
