ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team earned a 3-3 tie but lost in a shootout (1-0) to Alaska on Saturday (Jan. 16) at Yost Ice Arena. The Wolverines went into overtime for the first time since April, 10, 2008, but it took the first shootout in program history to break the 3-3 stalemate.
Junior defenseman Chad Langlais (Spokane, Wash.) scored the game-tying goal with 2:19 left in regulation after U-M trailed 3-1 early in the second period. Freshman right wings Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas) and Kevin Lynch (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) scored U-M's first and second goals, respectively.
Despite outshooting Alaska 10-4 through the first 20 minutes of play, it was the Nanooks that scored first on a goal by left wing Kevin Petovello with 1:15 remaining in the opening frame. The tally ended junior netminder Bryan Hogan's (Highland, Mich.) shutout streak at 132:38 minutes, which is the second-longest stretch of his career.
Michigan evened the game up at one goal apiece 2:15 into the second period on a redirection by freshman Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas) for his team-leading fifth power-play tally. As sophomore defenseman Brandon Burlon (Nobleton, Ontario) took a point shot, Brown adjusted his position to face Burlon in the low slot. Brown's positioning enabled him to tip the puck into the net between the left post and the goaltender's skate.
Alaska regained its lead with successive goals 29 seconds apart during a five-on-three power play in the first half of the middle frame. Dion Knelsen walked in from the corner along the bottom of the right faceoff circle to dodge a U-M defender and beat Hogan five-hole to give UAF a 2-1 lead. The Nanooks padded their lead to two goals when Brandon Knelsen sent the puck to Carlo Finucci rushing up the slot, allowing him to easily pop the puck into the cage.
The Wolverines cut Alaska's lead to one goal when Lynch tipped in a centering pass with 4:49 left in the second stanza. Junior center Matt Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) battled trying to carry the puck behind the Alaska net before whipping a pass toward the crease. Lynch crashed the net, getting his stick on Rust's feed on the edge of the crease to beat UAF goalkeeper Scott Greenham.
The Maize and Blue tied it up with 2:19 remaining in the contest thanks to the goal from Langlais. With an impending penalty for UAF, Langlais quickly settled a bouncing feed from Rust before blasting a shot through traffic from atop the left faceoff circle for his second marker of the season.
After a scoreless five-minute overtime, Michigan went first in the shootout. Junior left wing Carl Hagelin (Sodertalje, Sweden) was U-M's first shooter, but his low shot was blocked by Greenham. The Wolverines' subsequent attempts from Brown and junior center Louie Caporusso (Woodbridge, Ontario) were also stopped by the UAF netminder. Alaska's second shooter, Dion Knelsen, faked forehand to get Hogan down and slid the puck in the net on his backhand for the only goal of the shootout.
The Wolverines face off against Ferris State in a home-and-home series next weekend (Jan. 22-23). Both games are slated for an 8:05 p.m. start and will be televised by CBS College Sports with Friday's contest (Jan. 22) at Yost Ice Arena.
