COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team picked up its first win of the 2009 season by overwhelming Temple, 5-1, on Friday night (Sept. 4) in a neutral site contest held at the Maryland Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Wolverines scored all five goals in the second half and missed out on a shutout by a mere 11 seconds.
Michigan's junior class contributed four of the five goals as junior Zara Saydjari (Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan Area) snapped a scoreless tie 5:45 into the second half with a tip-in off a penalty corner. Junior Alicia Mayer (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) doubled the lead to 2-0 just 90 seconds later on her second goal in as many games. Senior/junior Paige Laytos (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and junior Meredith Way (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) then scored in the 53rd and 59th minutes, respectively, on direct penalty corners, and sophomore Bryn Bain (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) capped the U-M scoring with 2:34 left in the game.
U-M outshot the Owls 14-1 in the second half after holding just a 5-3 shots lead in the first period.
Michigan's next contest is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 6) against top-ranked Maryland, which defeated No. 16 Old Dominion this afternoon.

Michigan Head Coach Marcia Pankratz
On the offensive surge in the second half... "I thought in the beginning of the game we pressed Temple well and created offensive chances, but we were over anxious in not finishing. At halftime, we reminded them to be thorough in their skills and be confident. We really settled down with that early goal to start the second half and from there we played with more composure."
On getting goals from five different players... "We had a lot of chances in the first half, but the timing just wasn't where we needed it to be. Then in the second half to get that kind of versatility with five different goal scorers is just outstanding. All the goals displayed good skill. And they played hard throughout the whole game, which showed with the goal in the final few minutes."
On the defensive effort... "Our defense was good all over the field. We were able to get everyone into the game and use our depth. We had lots of contributions from everyone. Breaking through the struggles of the first half and having such success in the second half is a great attribute of a team. I was really proud of that."
