ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A deflected pass through the box proved the difference as the University of Michigan women's soccer team dropped its Big Ten opener, 1-0, at No. 21-ranked Ohio State on Sunday (Sept. 27) at Jesse Owens Stadium. The Wolverines caught a bad break in the 19th minute when a ball in the box ricocheted off a U-M defender for the game's lone goal.
Despite trailing in possession time, Michigan's defense managed to keep the Buckeyes offense at bay for much of the game, allowing just one shot on goal. Ohio State's lone goal came in the 19th minute and was the benefit of an errant pass through the box deflecting off a U-M defender and back towards the near post for the goal.
Michigan picked up the offensive pressure in the second half, building several runs into the Buckeye zone to start and finish the period. While the rushes equalized the time in the attacking zone, U-M could not generate the goal needed before the final horn.
The Maize and Blue returns to Ann Arbor for the Big Ten home opener against Northwestern on Sunday (Oct. 4) at 3:30 p.m. at the U-M Soccer Complex.
