ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 20-ranked University of Michigan field hockey had its home opener spoiled by a 5-1 loss to No. 5 Connecticut on Saturday, Sept. 12. U-M fell behind 4-0 in the first half despite out-shooting the Huskies. Sophomore Bryn Bain (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) had Michigan's lone marker, scoring for the third straight game.
Michigan had good pressure in the opening minutes of the game, garnering a penalty corner and another scoring chance off the rush. However, UConn goalie Andrea Mainiero stopped both attempts. Husky forward Loren Sherer ignited UConn's offense by rattling off a natural hat trick with goals at 6:59, 17:36 and 24:38. UConn scored once more to head into the half up, 4-0.
Bain's second-half goal came at 38:58 while the Huskies were down a player due to a yellow card. Bain dribbled into the UConn circle and fired a shot low past the goalkeeper. UConn answered eight minutes later to cap the scoring.
Michigan remains at home for tomorrow's (Sunday, Sept. 13) contest against Ball State. Game time is 1 p.m. at Phyllis Ocker Field.
