MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- In itssecond and final game of the Milwaukee Cup, the University of Michigan women's soccer team dropped a defensive battle to Marquette, 1-0, on Sunday (Aug. 30) at the Valley Fields. Sophomore/freshman goalkeeperHaley Kopmeyer(Troy, Mich./Lasher) made a career-high six saves in the contest.
The Wolverines maintained a defensive posture throughout the first half. Despite being outshot, the Maize and Blue managed to pacify the Golden Eagles' attack by allowing only one of12 shot attempts reach the target.
Deadlocked at 0-0 at the half, the two teams continued to battle defensively. Sophomore Kristen Goncalves(Ann Arbor, Mich./Gabriel Richard Catholic) gave the Wolverines a great scoring opportunity, beating a defender down the line and unleashing a shot from just inside the box that was met by a diving save from the Marquette goalkeeper. The game remained scoreless until the 84th minute when Marquette finally solved the U-M defense and used a header to grab the lonescore of the contest.
Michigan next returns to the friendly confines of the U-M Soccer Complex for a pair of intrastate showdowns. The Wolverines will welcome Central Michigan for a midweek contest under the lights at 7 p.m. on Thursday (Sept. 3) before playing a matinee with Eastern Michigan at 2 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 6).
