ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 47-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 5 Ohio State on Sunday afternoon (April 5) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (8-13, 2-4 Big Ten) surrendered their first doubles point in three matches and suffered straight-set losses on five of the six singles courts.
Sophomore Chris Madden (Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS) gave U-M its lone team point with a thrilling 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(15) comeback win over Chase Buchanan at No. 3 singles. Madden withstood four match points in the super-tiebreak set to come away with his team-high sixth straight victory. He holds a 13-6 record in dual-match play this season.
Junior Mike Sroczynski (Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School) and senior Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) both put forth a solid effort against their respective nationally ranked singles opponents, with Sroczynski dropping a tough 7-6(4), 6-4 loss to fourth-ranked Bryan Koniecko at No. 2 and Mazlin falling to eighth-ranked Steven Moneke by a 7-5, 6-4 score at No. 1.
The Buckeyes posted a pair of 8-3 victories at the bottom two doubles positions to take a 1-0 lead. Sroczynski and classmate George Navas (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) were on serve with Moneke and Justin Kronauge through 12 games at No. 1, but the 39th-ranked OSU duo earned a late break to escape with an 8-6 win.
The Wolverines have a midweek meeting with Michigan State on Wednesday (April 8) at 3 p.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility in East Lansing, Mich. U-M will then head to West Lafayette, Ind., to face Purdue on Sunday (April 12) at noon at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
