EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 49-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team tallied a dominating 7-0 victory over intrastate rival Michigan State on Wednesday afternoon (April 8) at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. The Wolverines (9-13, 3-4 Big Ten) earned their 12th doubles point of the season and won all six singles matches to come away with their fifth straight win over the Spartans (12-10, 0-7 Big Ten).
Senior Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) and sophomore Chris Madden(Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS) improved to a team-best 9-2 in dual-match play, earning an 8-6 triumph over Alex Forger and John Stratton at No. 2 to give the Maize and Blue an early edge in the doubles competition. Michigan State answered with an 8-6 victory of its own at No. 1 to draw even, but senior Peter Aarts (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) and junior Mike Sroczynski (Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School) pulled out an 8-6 win over Austin Brooks and Clark Richardson at No. 3 to clinch the first team point for Michigan. Since being paired together on March 28, Aarts and Sroczynski have won three of four matches.
Madden continued his steady play on the singles court as he cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Brooks at No. 4 to give U-M a 2-0 lead on the team scoreboard. Madden holds a 14-6 dual-match record and is the lone Wolverine to go unbeaten in the Big Ten Conference this year (7-0). Sroczynski put Michigan in position for the team win with his 6-4, 6-4 decision over Scott Rasmussen at No. 3.
Sophomore/freshman Drew Daniel (Overland Park, Kan./Laurel Springs School) provided the clincher for the fourth time this season. His 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Jason Norville at No. 6 gave U-M a 4-0 advantage and moved his dual-match record to a team-best 15-5. The Wolverines were victorious in the three remaining matches, with Mazlin and junior George Navas (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) defeating their respective opponents in super-tiebreaks and sophomore Jason Jung (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) securing U-M's first overall team sweep of the year with his third straight win.
The Wolverines close out their road schedule on Sunday (April 12) when they face Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind. The match is scheduled for a noon start at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
