Captain's Log with Mike DePietro
FRIDAY, APRIL 3 -- Man's Best Friend
Hello everyone! April is finally here! I personally have mixed feelings about this. Usually, I'm very excited because April usually brings warmer weather, but this year I can't seem to forget that it represents my last month of school. The count is now 21 days until I'm done and that's really hard to believe. I'm just going to focus on the nice weather and hopefully that will help me forget about the conclusion of my college career.
The team picked up its first Big Ten win this past weekend. It's no secret that our team has been struggling a bit lately, so picking up a win like we did against Northwestern on the road will hopefully help get the ball rolling. Confidence is huge when it comes to dual-match play, and I think this win will have us believing that we will get the job done in our next match. Losing so many close matches was hard for the team to swallow, but I strongly believe that it will make us better in the end. We will be prepared and ready for those tight situations that come up in postseason play.
Currently, I'm actively searching for a job for next year. It's been a pretty frustrating experience because so many companies are not hiring due to the economy. And if they are hiring, it's not for entry-level positions. I'm not too worried about it though because I know that a lot of my friends are in the same boat. I'm optimistic that eventually the right fit will come along and everything will work out for the best. Hopefully, that job will be in Chicago or Ann Arbor -- both are places that I love and can really picture myself living in next year.
Recently I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to get a dog this summer. Now don't get me wrong, this is not a random decision on my part. This has been a long time coming. The only dog my family ever had, a cocker spaniel named Nugget, died when I was four. Ever since that day, I've wanted a new dog. My parents would not allow it though. They claimed that I was not responsible enough to have a dog (even when I was 17 years old). I always took great offense to this and have been determined to get a dog ever since! Unfortunately, I couldn't get one during college because I wouldn't have been able to provide it with the attention and proper conditions it would require. But it seems I will have some free time this summer, so I see it as a perfect opportunity to get that puppy I have always wanted. I know that my four-year-old self will be very appreciative.
The team will finally be home again this weekend. Hopefully, you all are planning on coming out. We have two great matches scheduled, starting with Penn State on Saturday at 12 p.m. The crowd support at our last home match against Wake Forest was great, and we would love to have the same type of crowds this weekend. Thanks for reading and see you on Saturday! Go Blue!
