First Varsity Eight Collects Open-Water Wins Over Bison, Cougars

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan women's rowing first varsity eight defeated Bucknell and No. 12 Washington State on Saturday (April 18) at Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River to improve to 7-0 this season. The second varsity eight beat the Bison but lost to the Cougars, while the first varsity four won both of its races.
U-M's first varsity eight won its afternoon race in a time of 6:39.58, a length and a half ahead of WSU. The second varsity suffered a nearly two-length loss to the Cougars -- 6:51.94 to 6:58.22. The varsity fours race went Michigan 'A', Washington State, Michigan 'B', with six seconds separating first place from third place. U-M's 'A' crew crossed the line in 7:37.30, followed by WSU in 7:43.91 and Michigan's 'B' boat in 7:55.08.
The Wolverine novice eights kept their undefeated streak alive after the first novice eight picked up an open-water victory over the Cougars and the second novice eight defeated Michigan State; WSU did not have a second novice eight.
The Wolverines won all five morning races against the Bucknell Bison by open water. The first varsity eight won by over five lengths -- 6:43.18 to 6:59.97. The second varsity eight clocked a 6:54.7 to win by 11.9 seconds. Michigan's first and second varsity fours finished first and second, respectively -- 7:40.8 and 7:46.6. The novice eights completed the sweep of Bucknell with two additional triumphs.
The Wolverines wrap up this weekend's events tomorrow (Sunday, April 19) with morning races against Oregon State starting at 9 am. Racing will be held again on Griggs Reservoir in Columbus, Ohio.
