Captain's Log with Mike DePietro
FRIDAY, APRIL17 -- A Week to Remember
Peter Aarts, Jason Jung, Andrew Mazlin, Peter Aarts, George Navas, Mike Sroczynski, Jason Jung and I all attended the athletic academic awards banquet at the Michigan Union on Tuesday night. We all received U-Ms Athletic Academic Achievement Award. I would like to congratulate all these guys on a great accomplishment. For those of you who dont know, to receive this award you must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher or at least two consecutive semesters of a 3.0 GPA or higher. This is really difficult to accomplish at for any student at Michigan, but to accomplish this while balancing an athletes schedule is quite impressive. Along with our group of guys, 298 other student-athletes received this honor. Things like this are what make me proud to be a student-athlete at Michigan. I promise you that you cant find many colleges where this many athletes display such excellence, on and off the field.
Its a jam-packed weekend for our team. On Friday, it begins with an alumni golf outing. This is always a popular event and I know the alumni always enjoy an opportunity to get together. And you cant beat the course either, because the U-M Golf Course is one of the best in the country. Following the golf, our team banquet will be held that evening. I always look forward to this because it's a nice opportunity for our team to reflect and acknowledge all the great accomplishments of the year. The weekend continues on Saturday with a big match against Illinois and a match against Indiana on Sunday. Indianas match is Senior Day, and I cant believe it. It doesnt seem so long ago that it was my first home dual match. This weekend will certainly be busy for me, but I know it will be a lot of fun at the same time.
I would like to extend my congratulations to Chisako Sugiyama of the womens tennis team on setting the career singles mark for their program. It's an incredible accomplishment, and she certainly deserves it. I was glad that I was able to be in attendance to see her achieve this impressive feat.
Im gearing up to enjoy a stretch of great Detroit sports events. The Red Wings and Pistons are about to begin their respective playoff runs, so hopefully one of these teams will bring home a championship. Also, my beloved Detroit Tigers have begun their 2009 campaign. As of today, they are in first place in their division, which is much better than last years effort. I just hope I will be watching them in October this season.
People keep telling me that they read my blog every week. Its so good to know I have fans! And when I say fans, I mean my family and my teammates family members. I do love having people tell me they read this every week, so if you do, feel free to come up to me and tell me what you think! Thanks for reading, because I would be nothing without my fans! Hopefully I will see you this weekend and Go Blue!
