ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 28-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 23 Wake Forest on Saturday evening (March 7) in front of a record crowd of 551 at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (6-8) surrendered the doubles point for the second time in five matches and claimed just one win in singles play. The loss snapped U-M's 13-match home winning streak dating back to last season.
Wake Forest's top-ranked doubles team of Steven Foreman and Cory Parr used a break in the fourth game to open up a 4-1 lead over junior George Navas (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) and sophomore Jason Jung (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) at No. 1, and the Demon Deacon duo went on to take care of its three remaining service games before adding one more break in the final game to wrap up an 8-4 victory. It was Navas and Jung's first loss in four dual matches this season.
It was a similar story on the No. 3 court, as Wake Forest's David Hopkins and Jonathan Wolff earned an early break to take a 4-1 advantage over junior Mike Sroczynski (Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School) and sophomore/freshman Drew Daniel (Overland Park, Kan./Laurel Springs School). The Demon Deacon pair held serve for the remainder of the match to secure an 8-5 win and the first team point.
Senior Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) and sophomore Chris Madden (Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS) were on serve with Iain Atkinson and Andrew Brasseaux for the entire match at No. 2, and the Michigan tandem went on to win the final three points in the tiebreak to come away with a 7-6(4) victory. Mazlin and Madden have won four straight and stand at 8-4 overall.
The Demon Deacons collected a pair of straight-set wins at the top two singles positions to take a 3-0 advantage, and Jason Morgenstern's 7-6(5), 6-2 victory over Daniel at No. 6 clinched the team win for Wake Forest. It was Daniel's first loss in nine matches at the sixth spot this season.
Navas kept his perfect dual-match record intact and closed out the night on a winning note by defeating Hopkins in a super-tiebreaker at No. 5, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0(8). Navas is 5-0 at Nos. 5 and 6 this season.
The Wolverines close out their non-conference schedule next Sunday (March 15) at North Carolina. The match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.
