SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan water polo team had to settle for a fourth-place finish after losing to No. 5-ranked San Diego State, 9-6, and No. 11-ranked Loyola Marymount, 8-6, on day two of the Triton Invitational at the Canyonview Aquatic Center. Despite the results on day two, the Wolverines still earned their highest finish in three trips to the tournament. Sophomore Alison Mantel(Miami, Fla./Gulliver) paced the Wolverines with three goals on the day, bringing her weekend total to 10 goals.
Michigan kept pace with the nation's fifth-ranked team, staying within two goals until the final frame. SDSU opened the game with a 2-0 lead before the Wolverines broke through on a 6-on-5 goal fromCara Reitz(Miami, Fla./Gulliver). The sophomore got open in front of the Aztec goalkeeper and, after pumping the ball several times, drew an open shot and converted.
San Diego State came out hard in the second frame, forcing a save out of senior/junior goalkeeper Brittany May (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) before converting on a power play to go up 3-1. Reitz pulled the Wolverines back to within one goal, 3-2, 3:32 into the period thanks to a redirection caused by commotion in front of the net. SDSU scored twice more in the frame and appeared to have the 5-2 lead sewn up heading into the break, but a Mantel blast with nine seconds remaining kept the Maize and Blue within two at halftime.
May shined in the third period, holding the Aztecs to one goal while making three saves of the spectacular variety. Trailing 6-3, Mantel scored her second goal 4:50 into the stanza. With a power play in progress, Mantel got open and turned a one-timer into a score, and when the horn sounded to end the third quarter, Michigan trailed by a 6-4 margin.
San Diego State opened up its biggest lead of the day, an 8-4 advantage, on a penalty shot 19 seconds into the fourth period and a long shot that had eyes for the net under a minute later. Michigan did not go quietly, scoring with 5:39 remaining off the hand of senior Julie Hyrne(Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty). The senior took a cross-cage pass from junior Terri Bukofzer(Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson) and skipped it into the cage. The Wolverines continued to pressure the Aztecs, coming close to scoring on two blasts from junior Casie Kelly(Longwood, Fla./Lake Brantley) midway through the frame. The teams exchanged goals inside the last two minutes with junior Leah Robertson(Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) having the last work in the 9-6 contest, skipping a shot inside the far bar.
In the nightcap, Michigan got some good penalty killing but could not convert on its own 6-on-5 advantages. The Wolverines killed off 10-of-12 kickouts, including three 6-on-4 opportunities but were held pointless on 10 chances with the 6-on-5 advantage.
Michigan started the game's scoring inside two minutes of the opening sprint. The Wolverines applied pressure following a 6-on-5 advantage when sophomore Sarah Roberts(Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor) got a pass at two meters and skipped a shot in. LMU answered 30 seconds later with the help of a deflection for its first power-play goal. The two teams squared off in a defensive battle for the rest of the period before the Lions went up 2-1 with 1:27 remaining and tried to add to the lead with five seconds left, but senior Sharayah Hernandez (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) got her arm in front of the shot to keep it a one-goal game after one period.
The second period gave LMU much of the advantage it needed, outscoring the Wolverines by a 4-2 clip in the period. Senior Kelsey Haley(Portola Valley, Calif./Menlo) made it a 3-2 game with 3:53 left in the half when she guided a floater inside the far bar. Loyola Marymount answered with two quick goals to create a 5-2 advantage with 2:52 remaining. Michigan broke up the rally on a five-meter penalty from senior Carrie Frost(Saline, Mich./Saline), converting after a foul on Mantel. LMU added one more goal before the end of the period and took a 6-3 lead into the break.
Both defenses hunkered down in the third period with Mantel accounting for the only goal of the period. U-M opened the period by surviving the first of three 6-on-4 attacks thanks to a timely shot block from Roberts. With 59 seconds left in the frame, Mantel caught a break when a toss from seven meters out found its way into the net to pull U-M back to within two goals.
The Maize and Blue refused to go quietly, cutting the deficit to one goal 1:50 into the fourth stanza. A series of crisp passes led to Reitz finding a wide-open Robertson in front of the net for the score. LMU scored quickly to expand its lead to 7-5. Hyrne then put one last dent in the LMU net, scoring with 3:01 left off a shot that blew past the netminder to make it a 7-6 score. A five-meter penalty toss with 1:46 closed out the scoring, giving the Lions the 8-6 lead that stood up for the remainder of regulation.
Michigan will continue its road swing next weekend with the Harvard Invitational Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 14-15) in Cambridge, Mass.
