ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field coaching staff announced Tuesday (Dec. 1) that junior hurdler Carl Buchanon (South Bend, Ind./Clay), sophomore distance runner Craig Forys (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) and junior multi-event performer Frank Shotwell (Medina, Ohio/Medina) have been named tri-captains for the upcoming season.
Buchanon looks to build off a breakout sophomore campaign in which he won an individual Big Ten championship in the 400-meter hurdles (outdoor) and was honored as a first team All-Big Ten selection (outdoor). As U-M's top hurdler, Buchanon set career bests in the 60m, 110m and 400m hurdles in 2009. He was also part of Michigan's 4x400-meter relay team last season.
Forys distanced himself from the pack during last year's indoor season, setting career bests in the mile, 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter runs. He finished fourth at the Big Ten Indoor Championships in the 5,000-meter run and recorded an NCAA provisional time in the same race at the Husky Invitational. In high school, Forys was an indoor national champion in the distance medley relay (2005) and a two-time national champion in the two-mile run (2006, 2007).
Shotwell returns for his second stint as team captain after sharing the honor with Dan Harmsen and Justin Switzer last season. In 2008, Shotwell was a Big Ten champion during both the indoor (heptathlon) and outdoor (decathlon) campaigns and was a first team All-Big Ten selection in both. He has competed in 15 events across three seasons at U-M.
