ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team topped Minnesota, 6-0, to capture the Renfrew-Mariucci Trophy on Friday (Nov. 27) in the College Hockey Showcase at Yost Ice Arena.
U-M posted three tallies in the second period to take control of the game. Junior left wing Carl Hagelin (Sodertalje, Sweden) tied a career high with two goals, including a shorthanded tally in the third period. Junior netminder Bryan Hogan (Highland, Mich.) earned his first shutout of the season and fourth of his career, making 24 saves in the win. The Maize and Blue got points from 10 different players and markers from five Wolverines in the win.
Sophomore left wing David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.) opened the scoring in the waning minutes of the first period. Sophomore defenseman Brandon Burlon (Nobleton, Ontario), junior center Louie Caporusso (Woodbridge, Ontario) and Hagelin each added a goal in the middle frame. In the first half of the final stanza, Hagelin scored shorthanded for the Wolverines. Junior left wing Ben Winnett (New Westminster, B.C.) cemented the Michigan lead, netting a goal with 8:32 left in the contest.
Michigan's first goal did not arrive until 1:13 remained in the first stanza. Wohlberg received the puck from Caporusso in the neutral zone and raced up the right side. He corralled the puck as he came in toward the net, getting off a backhand shot from a weird angle -- near the goal line to the right of the Minnesota net. Wohlberg's shot went between Kangas' left knee and the post to give U-M a 1-0 lead.
Michigan padded its lead at the 9:52 mark in the middle frame with a power-play tally from Burlon. Freshman right wing Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas) pushed the puck to the top of the left faceoff circle for Burlon, who was rushing up the left point. Burlon one-timed his shot, beating Kangas on his blocker side.
Hogan may have faced just 10 shots through 35 minutes of play, but the junior netminder had to make some key saves to keep the Golden Gophers off the scoreboard. With 5:23 left in the second stanza, Hogan stopped an initial shot from a Minnesota forward and then kicked away the rebound shot seconds later.
The Wolverines capitalized on their sixth power-play opportunity of the night, scoring at the 15:25 mark in the middle period. Junior defenseman Chad Langlais (Spokane, Wash.) sent the puck from the left point to Caporusso, who was at the bottom of the right faceoff circle. His centering shot went off the skate of Minnesota defenseman Cade Fairchild and then sailed just inside of the right post. Winnett was credited with the secondary assist.
Nearly three minutes later, freshman defenseman Lee Moffie (Wallingford, Conn.) dished the puck up to Hagelin, who raced up the slot on a breakaway. His shot went in between Kangas' blocker and the right post to boost Michigan's lead to 4-0.
Another breakaway by Hagelin resulted in Michigan's first shorthanded marker of the season at the 7:58 mark in the final period of play. Junior center Matt Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) shoveled the puck ahead to a streaking Hagelin, who faked out the Minnesota netminder and beat him five-hole.
Winnett registered his fourth goal of the season with 8:32 remaining in the third period. He grabbed a loose puck, carried the disc into the Minnesota zone before attempting a crossing pass from the left faceoff circle. The pass was stopped by a Gophers' stick, but Winnett collected the puck once again and found an opening to extend Michigan's lead to six.
Michigan will conclude the College Hockey Showcase on Saturday evening (Nov. 28) against Wisconsin (NR USA Today/No. 15 USCHO) at Yost Ice Arena. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:35 p.m. and will be televised by Comcast (channel 900).
