COLUMBUS, Ohio. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team could not overcome 11 service errors and a .385 attack percentage from host Ohio State in a 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-22) loss on Friday night (Nov. 27) at St. John Arena.
Seniors Juliana Paz (Porto Alegre, Brazil/Iowa Western CC) and Veronica Rood (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) posted 11 and 10 kills, respectively, and Lexi Zimmerman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) dished out 34 assists in the loss.
In the deciding third set, Michigan built an 8-4 early lead before Ohio State rallied to take four straight points, tying the match at eight apiece and forcing a U-M timeout. Out of the break, Ohio State went on an 8-4 run, taking a 16-12 lead, thanks in part to three critical U-M service errors. The Wolverines rallied to within two at 21-19, but despite two big kills from Rood down the stretch, OSU pulled away for a 25-22 victory.
Set two was a classic back-and-forth affair with neither team holding larger than a one-point lead until OSU used back-to-back kills to grab a 19-16 advantage and force a Michigan timeout. The Wolverines responded with two straight points out of the break, but Ohio State pushed the lead back to three and held on for a 25-22 win and 2-1 set lead. Paz paced the Wolverines again with four kills in the set.
In set one, the Wolverines found themselves down early and unable to regain a lead as Ohio State pushed to a five-point advantage, holding it all the way to a 25-20 victory. Despite hitting .424, Michigan watched as Ohio State hit a staggering .654 in the frame. Paz paced U-M with five kills, while Rood added four.
The Wolverines remain on the road for their final regular-season match on Saturday night (Nov. 28) when they face No. 1 ranked Penn State at Rec Hall. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. with MGoBlue.com providing live audio and live game stats.
