WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team picked up four event wins and five NCAA 'B' marks on Friday (Nov. 20) to lead after day one of three at the Purdue Invitational at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. The Wolverines hold a four-point lead over No. 15 Louisville and also lead Big Ten rivals Ohio State and Purdue in the six-team competition.

The Wolverines kicked off the meet with their 200-yard freestyle relay team of senior Margaret Kelly (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), senior Leigh Cole (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), sophomore Alexa Mehesan (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) and junior Natasha Moodie (Miramar, Fla./Miramar). The quartet trailed through the first 100 yards but turned on the jets to capture the lead in the third leg, eventually touching the wall at 1:30.38, nearly a quarter of a second faster than Louisville.

Senior Emily Brunemann (Crescent Springs, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) continued her dominance in distance events with a win in the 500-yard freestyle. Kelly then followed up with a win of her own in the 200-yard individual medley. The times for both Brunemann and Kelly are new season highs by about three seconds and both earned NCAA 'B' marks.

The day concluded with the 400-yard medley relay, with the team of sophomore Liz Johnson (Milford, Mich./Milford), freshman Julia Andracki (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect), Kelly and Moodie giving Michigan another win and another NCAA 'B' qualifying mark. The quartet was behind through the first 250 yards, but Kelly's second 50-yard sprint during the third leg propelled the Wolverines into the lead and they did not look back.

Over in the diving well, sophomore Amanda Lohman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) gave Michigan some points with her third-place finish on the three-meter board. Her score of 314.30 is the highest mark she has received since setting a new career high of 325.50 against Toledo and Toronto on Oct. 23.

Michigan will look to maintain its lead when action picks up tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 21) for day two of the Purdue Invitational. Preliminaries are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with the finals at 6 p.m.

# NCAA 'B' Timep Preliminaries

N O T E S

• Emily Brunemann came into Friday's first day at Purdue already having met a 'B' time in the 500-yard freestyle, but she bested her previous mark of 4:46.17 in both the prelims (4:41.84) and the finals (4:43.31).

• With their time of 1:30.38, Michigan's 200-yard freestyle relay team earned an NCAA 'B' mark, the first relay team to do so for the Wolverines this season.

• Natasha Moodie returned to the pool for the first time in nearly a month. She last competed against Toledo and the University of Toronto on Oct. 23 and missed the last two meets against Texas and Indiana and Florida and Stanford. In her first race back, the 50-yard freestyle, Moodie finished third (22.85) but earned an NCAA consideration time.
