ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior George Navas (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory) was voted University of Michigan men's tennis team captain for the 2009-10 season by his teammates, head coach Bruce Berque announced Thursday (Nov. 19).
This fall season, Navas went 2-3 in singles action and formed a dangerous doubles tandem with junior Jason Jung (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance). Together, Navas and Jung reached the final of the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championship (Oct. 16-19), going 4-1. The two were ranked No. 27 in the ITA's preseason doubles poll.
An exceptional student, Navas was named an ITA Scholar-Athlete for the 2008-09 academic year, and he is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection (2008, '09). He is one of two seniors on this year's roster, joining Mike Sroczynski (Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs Prep).
"George has done a fantastic job this semester, both with his own tennis and taking ownership in the leadership aspect of this team," Berque said. "The fact that his teammates chose him as captain means his teammates share that opinion as well. It's a great team honor to have, and I have full confidence that George will be a terrific team leader this year."
"It's an honor to get that recognition from my teammates," Navas said. "To be given this title by my peers means a lot to me. My teammates have put a lot of faith in me, and now it's about moving forward as a whole to have the best season we can."
