EAST LANSING, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's tennis junior Chris Madden (Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa) reached the finals of the Big Ten Individuals on Monday (Nov. 2), but in his second three-set match of the morning, ultimately fell to Josh McTaggart of Indiana, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. Senior Mike Sroczynski (Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs Prep), sophomore Duncan Muil (Lake Jackson, Texas) and freshman Chris Cha (Eureka, Mo./University of Missouri High School) joined Madden in singles and doubles competition.
Madden was on the brink of getting bumped from the tournament by Santiago Gruter (Indiana) in the semifinals. After losing the first set, 6-2, Madden was down 5-1 in the second set and facing elimination, until he turned the tables on Gruter, storming back to take the set, 7-6 (5). He closed the match out with a 6-3 score in the final set, setting up his finals showdown with McTaggart.
After joining the Wolverines last month, Muil made his collegiate debut on Friday (Oct. 30), competing in doubles with Cha. He earned his first win with Cha, as the tandem defeated the Michigan State pair of Hulewicz and Roehmer, 8-6. The two scored another win in doubles, but Muil was bounced from the singles after two losses. Cha, meanwhile, continued to get more experience as his freshman season moves forward, going 2-2 in singles action.
Junior Jason Jung (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance) will represent Michigan beginning this Thursday (Nov. 5) at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, held at Yale University. Jung was one of 32 players selected to play.

Q U O T E S
Associate Head Coach Sean Maymi
On how Michigan stacked up Big Ten opponents ... "It was tough to measure where we are at compared to other Big Ten schools because not everybody sends their guys. However, it was good to see where our guys were at individually. It was also good to see us get some wins under our belt, result-wise."
On Madden's tournament run ... "Result-wise, it was good for him to get some wins under his belt. He was probably playing against some competition where he would have been favored, but he did what he had to do all weekend. He felt comfortable and looked pretty good out there."
On Duncan Muil's debut ... "We're trying to get him as many matches as possible. You can practice a lot with someone, but you really get a feel for where a player is at when they are playing in matches. We get to see the things he needs to improve on. With that said it was good to have him out there and playing matches."
U-M Junior Chris Madden
On his tournament run ... "I would have obviously liked to win that last one, but like Sean said, it was good to get match wins under my belt. I really felt I was playing a lot better in the finals than I was in the first round."
On his physical state ... "I feel really good. We've been working out a lot, but today it was more the mental aspect than anything. When you're on your sixth set of the day like I was today, it wears you out a little bit, especially when you haven't done that in a while. I felt I played well considering the circumstances, but a win would have been real nice."
