ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team opened the 2009 dual-match season with a commanding 6-1 victory over Western Michigan on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 24) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (1-0) came out on top in a competitive doubles competition and followed with wins on all but one of six singles courts. U-M owns a 51-8 advantage in the all-time series with the Broncos (3-1) and has won six straight meetings between the two programs.
Sophomore Chris Madden (Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS) and sophomore/freshman Drew Daniel (Overland Park, Kan./Laurel Springs School) got off to a fast start in their career doubles debut, claiming six of the first seven games en route to an 8-3 victory over Kazuya Komada and Pablo Olivarez at No. 3. Western Michigan's Casey Cullen and Kevin Hayward evened up the doubles competition less than a minute later, earning an 8-3 win over senior Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) and junior George Navas (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) at No. 2.
In the marquee matchup at No. 1 doubles, Michigan's No. 8-ranked tandem of junior Mike Sroczynski (Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School) and sophomore Jason Jung (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) pulled out a 9-7 victory over the No. 33-ranked Bronco duo of Michael Calderone and Zeyad Montasser. Sroczynski and Jung have won 12 of their 18 matches together in 2008-09.
Jung carried the momentum into singles play and provided the Wolverines with a 2-0 advantage with a convincing 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Hayward at No. 1. It was Jung's third career win at the top spot. Madden got out in front of Brad Noel early in the No. 5 match and went on to secure a 6-0, 7-5 victory, bringing U-M within one point of the team win.
Western Michigan stayed alive with a victory at No. 2, but senior Peter Aarts (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) put the match away with a 7-6(3), 6-4 decision over Montasser at No. 4. Mazlin kept things rolling with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Komada at No. 3, and Daniel battled back to earn a gutsy 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over Cullen in the first dual singles match of his career.
The Wolverines return to the Varsity Tennis Center tonight to take on Ball State at 6 p.m.
