ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team opened the 2008-09 campaign by hosting the Wolverine Invitational this weekend (Sept. 19-21) outside at the Varsity Tennis Center, competing in a series of matches against players from Notre Dame, Denver and Miami (Fla.) in the three-day event and concluding the weekend with a combined record of 23-15 in singles and doubles. Sophomore Jason Jung (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance) claimed first in the individual standings to win the invite, posting 10 more points than the second-place finisher.
On the first day of competition, the Wolverines won four doubles matches against Miami headlined by a tight match at No. 2 where the Michigan tandem of junior George Navas (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) and sophomore/freshman Drew Daniel (Overland Park, Kan./Laurel Springs School) pulled out a 9-7 win over Miami's pair of Keith Crowley and Igancio Taboada. In singles action, Michigan took five of eight matches from Denver, including a 3-6, 7-6(3), 7-6(3) win by junior Mike Sroczynski (Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School) at No. 3 over Benny Althaus.
On Saturday, Michigan opened fast to take four singles matches from Miami. Jung and senior Peter Aarts (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane) picked up wins in tight matches at No. 1 and No. 5, respectively. Jung pulled out a 7-6(4), 7-5 win over David Rosenfeld, while Aarts held on for a 7-6(3), 7-5 win over J.C. Whitner. In doubles, the Maize and Blue split competition with Notre Dame. Michigan took wins at No. 2 and No. 3 while Notre Dame picked up victories at No. 1 and No. 4. U-M's two wins both went into a tiebreaker with Navas and Daniel prevailing 9-8(4) at No. 2 and senior Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman) and sophomore Chris Madden (Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa) taking a 9-8(5) win at No. 3.
In final day action, Michigan opened strong and swept Denver in doubles and carried the momentum over into the singles competition against a tough Notre Dame squad. The Wolverines picked up wins at the No. 1, 2 and 8 spots with Notre Dame claiming the rest of the singles victories.
Leading the way for Michigan was Jung, who finished the weekend with a 3-0 singles record. The newly formed doubles tandem of Navas and Daniel also finished the weekend unscathed with a 3-0 record. Senior Mike DePietro (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser) and Mazlin also picked up two singles victories on the weekend.
Michigan will take some time off before heading to the D'Nova All-American Championship Oct. 6-12 in Tulsa, Okla. Mazlin, Jung and Sroczynski will represent the Maize and Blue in qualifying singles beginning on Oct. 6. Jung and Sroczynski will also play in main draw doubles competition.
Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Bruce Berque
On the weekend ... "The tournament overall was a success and accomplished its purpose, which was to play matches and to get our guys back into the competitive mindset. In addition, it's a positive for Sean (Maymi) and I to be able to see where we are as a team and where the guys are individually, specifically in areas that we need to improve on. We were able to assess them individually which helps us to know what to work on as we prepare for the upcoming season."
On the play of Jason Jung ... "Jason winning the tournament, going 3-0 in singles playing at the top spot and going 2-1 in doubles, was definitely a positive. More importantly, he is playing good, smart tennis. He is playing better and smarter and has really internalized the things that we worked on with him last season. I'm quite optimistic that he can become one of the better players in college tennis if he keeps working hard."
