ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With all five starting players among the top 25 individually, the University of Michigan men's golf team posted back-to-back sub-par team totals to take a two-stroke lead with an 11-under 557 total after day one of the 2008 Wolverine Intercollegiate today (Saturday, Sept. 20) at the U-M Golf Course. The Wolverine hold a two-shot lead over UC Davis, which closed at 559 (285-274).
The Maize and Blue jumped out to an early first-round lead after posting a two-under 282 first-round team total behind senior co-captain Nick Pumford's (St. Charles, Mich./St. Charles HS) career-best, five-under 66. After posting bogeys on Nos. 1 and 4 to start his round, Pumford posted five birdies on the rest of the front side to make the turn at three under. He added birdies on Nos. 10 and 14 and parred the remaining seven holes. Sophomore Alexander Sitompul (Jakarta, Indonesia/Bradenton Prep Academy) aided the Wolverines' sub-par first-round tally with a one-under 70.
With the hole locations moved for the second round, the Wolverines took advantage of ideal weather and scoring conditions as they tied a U-M record with a nine-under 275 as every starter broke par. Sitompul led with a three-under 68, while senior co-captain Bill Rankin (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS), junior Ross Millman (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day School) and sophomore Lion Kim (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary Prep School) all carded two-under 69s.
Pumford's one-under 70 in the second round gives him a six-under 136 first-day total and a one-shot lead over UC Davis' Ramie Sprinkling (69-69/137). They will be paired together in the final round. Sitompul is tied for third individually with a 138 total (70-68), while Rankin is tied for 14th at 141 (72-69). Kim (74-69) and Millman (74-69) are tied for 24th at 143.
Five Wolverines are playing as individuals. Freshman Matt Thompson (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview HS) made his collegiate debut and sits tied for ninth at 140 (68-72). Other individual scores include: junior Michael Slovitt (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier High School), tied for 31st at 144 (75-69); freshman Alex Frankel (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School), tied for 58th at 149 (75-74); junior David Weisfeld (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale HS), tied for 71st at 151 (74-77); and junior Billy McKay (Grand Blanc, Mich./David Leadbetter Golf Academy), tied for 83rd at 154 (80-74).
The Wolverine Intercollegiate will conclude Sunday (Sept. 21). The final 18 holes will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
