YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team led for most of the second half but settled for a 2-2 tie with Eastern Michigan Sunday afternoon (Aug. 24) on Scicluna Field. Junior Amy Klippert(Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) scored both goals for the Wolverines in the contest, with freshman Kelsey Rogind(Emerald Hills, Calif./St. Francis) assisting on both scores.
After an even first half that saw neither team put a goal on the board, the Wolverines came out flying in the second and Klippert dented the twine in the 51st minute to put U-M up 1-0. Rogind sent a pass off a corner kick into the box where Klippert, with her back to the goal, used her heel to send the ball bouncing into the net from close range.
Klippert and Rogind got together again seven minutes later to give U-M a 2-0 advantage. Rogind chipped a ball past the defenders and toward the goalkeeper near the middle of the box, forcing the EMU netminder to attempt to collect the ball with Klippert bearing down on her. Klippert was able to get just enough of her body on the ball before the Eagle goalie could get a grip, sending it into the net.
Eastern Michigan responded 45 seconds later on a one-on-one chance to pull to within a 2-1 margin. The Wolverines maintained their one-goal lead until the final 30 seconds when the Eagles tied up the game at 2-2. EMU's Deana Kinter beat Gates to a free ball along the U-M backline and bent a ball into the net at the far post.
In the two extra frames, the Maize and Blue had several offensive opportunities but was unable to capitalize.
The next contest on Michigan's slate comes Friday (Aug. 29) when it travel to take on Cincinnati at 5 p.m. in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Greg Ryan
On the improved pace between the first and second halves... "They are such a young team and they are still trying to find themselves. In the first half, it looked like 11 players who were all playing a different brand of soccer -- there was no cohesion. We talked about it at halftime and I told them that we've got some very skillful players that can possess the ball, but we've got to work together to create chances. I told them to just go out and play, don't worry if you win or lose, just collectively work the ball together and move the ball together. I thought they did much better than we have in the second half."
On his team's response to the late goal... "I was happy with how they responded. I think we had more of the play in overtime than Eastern Michigan. We certainly had the better chances (in overtime). We had one that hit the post, players getting in line and serving some balls in. We've got to keep working on those sorts of situations because I think we can get a lot of goals on them."
On the toll that traveling so much is having on the team... "It is catching up to them. They are exhausted because they don't have a home. Travel takes a toll on you, but that's the way it is going to be. The good side of it for this group of players is it won't ever get worse than this. We won't have to play without a field or play our home games on the road after this. If they can deal with this year, they will be able to deal with future years."
U-M Junior Amy Klippert
On her first career goal... "On the corner, one of our defenders was able to head it down and I couldn't turn, so I had to use my heel to push it behind me and it went in. I was kind of shocked."
On the team chemistry with so many new faces in the lineup... "I think it's great. We have an incredible freshman class and we are really lucky that they are so great. The team chemistry this year is unbelievable, and I think you can really see it on and off the field."
U-M Freshman Kelsey Rogind
On her two-assist performance... "It was really exciting. I was hoping that my crosses would become goals. I've been practicing a lot and I've always liked assisting on goals. I feel like I am a playmaker, so it was exciting to get that under my belt."
