CINCINNATI, Ohio C The University of Michigan women's soccer team dropped a non-conference match2-1at Cincinnati Friday evening (Aug. 29) at Gettler Stadium. Freshman Clare Stachel(Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) netted her first career goal in the first half for the Wolverines' lone score. Senior Madison Gates(Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) made four saves in the loss.
After a quiet 10 minutes to start the contest, both teams joined together in a six-minute flurry that gave the Bearcats a 2-1 lead. Cincinnati sandwiched a pair of long-ball goals in the 12th and 18th minutes around a marker from Stachel at 15:05. Stachel was in the right place at the right time on a U-M free kick, depositing a ball that deflected off of the Bearcats' netminder.
Cincinnati tried to keep the barrage going, taking four cracks at the net before the period was out, but Gates was up to the task on all of them, turning three aside and watching one sail wide. The crucial saves kept the Maize and Blue within a goal heading into the break.
The second half was a defensive battle with the Wolverines owning a small 3-1 advantage in shots. Neither team was able to generate a goal in the frame as each only managed one shot on goal the rest of the way.
The Wolverines will head to Oxford, Ohio, to take on Miami (Ohio) on Sunday (Aug. 31) at 1 p.m.
